If there’s already a thread about this, I’d appreciate it if the mods could move this one.
So, here’s the deal: I used to have really long hair that I almost always kept tied back in a ponytail. I started noticing this constant soreness on my scalp—just right at the top. It gets pretty tender to the touch, too. Honestly, washing my hair seems to provide some temporary relief, but for quite a while now, my hair has been thinning out. My stylist actually suggested I just chop it off, thinking the tension from tying it up was the main culprit. So, I cut it short, about ear-length, but the hair loss didn't stop. Now that it's grown back down to my shoulders, the pain is coming back. I can't help but tie it up, though, because when I'm holding my baby, she's constantly tugging on it from every direction! For the last three days, I’ve tried leaving it down and keeping it washed, but the pain is just intense—worse than anything I've felt before. Even when it's loose, it won't stop aching. It’s honestly scary. I try massaging my scalp all the time, but that just seems to make it hurt even more. My hair has gotten noticeably thinner over the last two years.
Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Any idea what might be going on? I keep telling my husband that I'm terrified of going bald, but he just tells me I'm being dramatic. I would really appreciate any advice or help you guys can give.

If you hit up some of the high-end pharmacies or wellness clinics around here, you can actually get a free scalp analysis
to see what's really going on with your hair roots. Honestly, it’ll take you like five minutes tops, and you might actually walk away with some real answers—especially if you're worried about thinning out.

Have you even tried massaging your scalp yet?

And look, obviously seeing a doctor is the move I'm gonna recommend every single time, because you just never know what's actually happening under the surface...

Thanks so much for the advice! I think I'll check in with some local pharmacies to see if they offer those scalp exams. Honestly, my hair has never felt this bad—there was a night where it hurt so much I actually had to hold my hair up just to stop the tension. I'm just so worried about losing it. 😲

I doubt you're losing hair; pain that intense usually isn't about balding 🤷
you definitely made the right call getting checked out by a doctor or an expert 🙂

Honestly, I’m telling you—get yourself to a doctor ASAP. In the meantime, though, grab some honey or chamomile tea... actually, just mix them together and massage that stuff into your scalp.

Back when I had longer hair, if I spent days with it pulled back in a tight ponytail or pinned up with clips, my head would absolutely throb once I finally let it down. It felt like I’d basically irritated my hair follicles because everything had been yanked in one direction for way too long.

For me, the massage was a total lifesaver. And look, it doesn't cost you anything—since you're home with the kid anyway, just rub some honey onto the area, throw a plastic bag over it, and let it sit for an hour or two. Honey is amazing for irritation and minor scrapes; it's a natural antiseptic and really helps strengthen those roots.

***The most important thing, though? Stop tying your hair up in ponytails. Seriously. There are a million different hairstyles out there—whether your hair is long, medium, or short—that'll keep it out of your face and away from curious little fingers.

Uh, let me see if I can get this to work... honestly, does anyone know if this stuff will actually come out in the wash?? I guess it might not matter what kind of honey it is, right? Or should I be picky? I have some sitting in my pantry, but I have absolutely no clue what variety it is. This whole situation is just driving me crazy...

You can always go with olive oil. And seriously, stop tying your hair up in a ponytail for a while.
