Blood in urine: What should I do?

I'm reaching out here because my doctor isn't in NYC right now, so I can't get an appointment anytime soon!

It all just hit me out of nowhere two days ago!
Blood in my urine, really bad stomach pains, burning, and this constant urge to go—it feels like I haven't left the bathroom!

The other symptoms disappeared just as fast as they showed up, but the burning is still there and my urine is still bloody!

What could this be? 🤔 What should I do since my doctor isn't available? 🤷

Could it be kidney stones or just some sand?

I am assuming you are a student—so your primary doctor is likely back in your hometown? If you don't start feeling better within a day or two, it would honestly be best to head to an Urgent Care facility. Urinary tract infections aren't something to take lightly—especially since they can cause real trouble if they aren't fully cleared up properly.

I think I’ll just head over to the student clinic. They aren't really supposed to handle major health issues—mostly just routine checkups and paperwork—but fingers crossed they can squeeze me in!

Those could actually be symptoms of E. coli. I guess you should probably head over to see your doctor as soon as you can.

Man, that’s a mess. If you hadn't mentioned the pain and stinging, I might have thought it was like that one case where someone overdid it on the beets and ended up with dyed urine. But this? You really need to see a doctor.

It’s because the anatomical distance between the anus and the urethra is quite small in women—which means bacteria from the digestive tract can migrate to the urinary tract fairly easily. This is actually why little girls are taught to always wipe from front to back. Also, some studies suggest that wearing thongs can increase the risk of transferring those bacteria...

Honey, please, go read a book about anatomy and how the female body actually works. 🙄

It sounds like a UTI caused by E. coli. You can pick that up if you don't wipe properly after using the bathroom, or even from wearing thongs—it basically just pushes those bacteria from your rear toward the front. It can also happen from sex. Just regular, vigorous sex... what people call "honeymoon cystitis."
Either way, please go see a doctor and get a urine culture done. It might be nothing, but it can turn into something really serious if you ignore it.
In the meantime, drink a ton, ton, TONS of water (plain water, not soda or juice!) so you're peeing constantly and flushing everything out as much as possible. And don't forget to make that doctor's appointment!

Sounds like a textbook UTI, and a nasty one at that. You don't even need to wait for an appointment with your GP—just head straight to the ER. You'll likely get a round of antibiotics, but in the meantime, grabbing some cranberry supplements from a drugstore might take the edge off.

It doesn't matter which specific bacteria it is; it doesn't always have to be E. coli, since other bugs can cause UTIs too. I highly doubt it's kidney stones, though.
See a doctor, because leaving an infection untreated can turn into a real nightmare.

Have you noticed if the blood appears at the start, middle, or end of the stream? If it's at the end, it might mean the source is actually the kidneys rather than just the bladder or urinary tract.

I was actually just at my doctor's office yesterday for the exact same thing. She had me do a quick dipstick test immediately. She told me if the results were bad, she'd start me on meds, but if they were okay, she'd send me for a culture and a referral to a gynecologist. Apparently, it's often a vaginal infection that manifests through the urinary tract, which causes that pressure feeling and the blood in the urine... Well, my test showed blood, so she sent me off for a culture...
