I’m curious about the forum rules regarding the sharing of private messages. I ask because Kiki posted a direct message intended solely for her in the Photography subforum... If this constitutes a violation of our guidelines, I’d like to know what steps will be taken to address it.

You know, Megan, when someone sends me something nasty or starts leaking other people's private info, and I tell them it’s out of line but they just keep going... well, that’s when you have to report it. You have to find a way to stop that person from harassing you. When someone takes your personal business and spreads it to people who have no business knowing, you should use every tool available—alert the admins, the mods, whoever is running the show. On other sites, it really just depends on whether the management allows that kind of behavior or not. Here, message privacy is actually somewhat regulated to protect people from malicious harassment. It happened to me once where some idiot hacked one of my old accounts and started sending stupid messages. Honestly, that part was fine, but they were sending those moronic messages in my name to other people. You can imagine how much I hated being provoked by people or having them write nonsense about me... stone-faced, truly. I also dealt with some harassment from those weird clone accounts, and when they finally got banned, they spent all their time whining about how the moderators were being unfair.

It’s honestly pathetic when people stoop to this level of public internet bickering because they don't have the guts to face someone in person. If you actually know someone—if you have their number or see them in real life—those kinds of conflicts get settled one-on-one. Whenever anyone sends a private message here that becomes an issue, there's every right to report it and defend yourself publicly. Nobody wants the rest of the community living under a delusion just because someone is spreading lies about them. Sorry, but no. Personally, I wouldn't want people judging me based on things that aren't true. They have every right to judge me based on my public posts, sure, but not based on behind-the-scenes whispers and smirks... though, I suppose one should stand by everything they write, even the private stuff.

And the moderators, good grief, they're all over the place. It's strange, for instance, how a single forum can be ruled with such a narrow mindset, even when the topics are so broad that a decent mod would need to understand actual science rather than just acting like some little social studies professor. Having a general education is a rare commodity these days, mostly found in circles of genuine intellectuals. And being an intellectual is a state of mind, not something you get from a specific degree. It's about having knowledge and the ability to think broadly—being open-minded, instead of being a slave to petty, small-minded local interests or sucking up to anyone who claps for you. Ah well. There's injustice, there's stupidity. Don't worry. It'll all pass...

Way back in the day, posting PMs was a huge no-no—the admins used to treat it like one of the worst offenses you could commit.

I'm talking about sharing the messages themselves, not the bans. ☕

I actually went looking for this in the current terms of service.
I didn't find anything.

Honestly, people should have the right to be protected from spam and harassment through PMs.

No offense intended, but honestly? The current rules are actually pretty solid, especially considering who put them together.

By letting private messages be posted—and not slapping anyone with a penalty for it—we’re setting a really nasty precedent. Just try looking at it from the perspective of someone whose private DMs were leaked. I wouldn't be feeling too great about it myself, whether it was meant as a joke, some teasing, or straight-up cyberbullying.

It gets even messier when a moderator is allowed to post a user's private message without any consequences at all—regardless of what it says. Instead of Kiki and Toc trying to fix things by leaking private messages, moderators should be handling those issues privately with the admins. Plus, I find it hard to believe a regular user would get away with posting a private message from a moderator. And let’s be real—if the mods (and admins) know how to send abusive messages... they definitely do.

Double standards are never a "quality" solution, you know? But since they seem to be a constant here on this forum—I guess it's just part of the charm, right?

You’ve been hanging around here since 2003. Surely by now you’ve realized that nobody actually enjoys the whining? If Kiki decides you’re a problem for whatever reason—maybe it started because you were posting more photos than the subforum rules actually allow🤔—and the rest of the mods or admins aren't taking you seriously, just shrug it off. Drop an asshole emoji and move on with your life. Or, you know, just leave and tell this whole site to go jump in a lake.

Regarding leaking private messages: is there any actual reason why we shouldn't penalize people for doing it, assuming we even wanted to? For instance, when someone starts sharing incredibly nasty, vile insults sent via DM. Is there any way to sanction the user who posted the screenshot, rather than just the one who actually wrote the insults in the first place?

You took the words right out of my mouth. Just like that whole thing about posting how many sides of cardboard you have. Absolute rock bottom.
Low blows that the mods should, in principle, be strong enough to ignore.

I honestly think it’d be a lot smarter if you just asked whether sending abusive messages is actually allowed—though, let's be real, this isn't your first rodeo. You already caught a permanent ban—totally deserved, too—over at Photography Forum. Nobody is "harassing" you anymore with rules you clearly have zero interest in following anyway. Your outbursts aren't being triggered by anything... they're just happening. I'm not even really addressing you directly here, but your whole situation, much like how you acted over at Photography Forum, is pretty much done and dusted. I truly don't understand why you feel the need to keep sending these nasty messages... I really don't. And hey, if you're going to keep doing it, just know they might end up getting posted publicly. Or are you just hoping people won't see your true colors? ☕

Nah... well, at least that was how things worked back in my day—you could say just about anything in the PMs, and a mod (or anyone else, really) wasn't allowed to post them or punish you for them...

That’s actually why I’ve gone ahead and disabled my PMs entirely.
If someone truly needs to reach me for something important, they’ll just have to find another way.
The only kind of jerk who benefits from me turning off my inbox is the one sending absolute garbage; they feel like they "won" because they know their toxicity managed to get under my skin.

Where does it actually say that, though?

Leaking private messages is a double-edged sword. If someone gets hit with a barrage of insults, their immediate instinct is to warn everyone else about what kind of jerk they're dealing with—especially if the mods refuse to shut down the guy despite being asked. It's just human nature... that first impulse is basically: "Screw this idiot, let everyone else know he's a loser so they can stay away."

Still, it’s definitely rude to take something completely private and blast it publicly just out of spite or because you misread the room.

I guess I just wonder who gets to be the judge of what counts...🤷

It’s simple, really—you can warn people without airing out private messages. A quick note like: "X keeps sending me messages where they y my family is plenty. That’s a totally understandable human reaction. But posting a private message? That’s never okay. Besides, if there's complaining to be done, it should go "up" the chain, not "down." So, Kiki—acting as a moderator—can just pass that private message along to the super-mods or the admins. There's absolutely no reason to post it where the whole forum can see it.

Harassment via private messages is such a messy area, too—not just because of what we saw here, but because it's so incredibly easy to fake or edit a message when you forward it. Maybe screenshots could solve that? It would just take some genuine effort and positive energy—mostly from the people in charge. Being a leader on paper is one thing, but actually leading is another story entirely.

* Maybe even skip the super-mods, since they're technically below moderators on the hierarchy. They're more like "sub-staff," right?
** Posting a private message like this is just incredibly rude and uncultured. An experienced, veteran moderator should definitely know better.

Hmm, let's get specific. A while back, I received a PM claiming my mother paid for my college tuition with money earned from... well, engaging in sexual acts with local American dogs, specifically Great Danes, and that she was some kind of star on various bestiality sites because of it. In the real world, someone like that would simply be crushed😠 So, how do you handle that kind of thing on a forum?

Instead of making a scene online, you could just forward the stuff to an admin and expect them to fix the mess.
Because there's no denying it, the issue is definitely real.

Believe it or not, this forum is basically one giant sandbox filled with cool toys—but also plenty of crap. Honestly, the worst thing you can do—worse than stepping in a pile of doo-doo—is actually taking any of this seriously. And that's exactly what happens when you give attention to people sending stuff like that.

That's just how I see things—just my two cents on how this whole forum works.

Since you asked, I’d say there are really only two ways to handle it. Option one:
a) delete the message;
b) hit them with the ignore button;
c) just forget about it.

Option two:
a) laugh it off;
b) troll the idiot whenever you're bored just to get an extra chuckle out of it.

That’s pretty much my playbook for hanging out here. Since I don't take this place seriously at all, the crowd that lives for "forum ego" has a massive problem with me. I've added a few of them to my ignore list—though, unfortunately, you can't ignore the moderators—but I still troll them just enough to pass the time and laugh at the ridiculous stuff they write to defend their precious online status.

It's a sandbox, I'm telling you.

I’ll admit, there were a couple of times I posted something that felt pretty heavy—mostly because I wanted everyone else to see exactly what kind of absolute jerk we were dealing with, so they wouldn't fall for his polite act. Naturally, I got hit with a mountain of accusations that I was some kind of psychopath. Heh, yeah. Probably just projection, who knows...😁
and all this happened while the mods were basically asleep at the wheel. I was actually risking a ban myself. Eventually, though, they started paying attention...

If someone calls me names or makes some comment about my weight, I don't even blink; anyone who actually knows me knows how I am. But once they start bringing up my career, attacking my credentials, or claiming I'm out here chasing younger guys😂 and spinning these ridiculous little fairy tales about my size (okay, fine, I've put on a few pounds lately🤣), starting with total lies about my education... then I'm lighting fires and breathing down the admins' necks!😠 Sometimes it feels like a waste of breath, though...😢

Not bad, though I’d honestly love to run into that fool in person just so I could politely ask him to repeat that insult one more time. Just to satisfy some primal urge, I guess...😁
