Hi there

My mom just had her VEP (visual evoked potential) test done. The results show her left eye is normal, but the right one is showing some "dysfunction."

Is this kind of finding permanent? I'm trying to figure out if the test is just capturing how things look right this second, or if it indicates lasting damage that won't change back.

If anyone here has experience with this or knows more about it, I’d really appreciate any insight you can share.

Basically, Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) measure how your brain’s visual cortex reacts to stimuli—think things like flashes of light or a checkerboard pattern. There is a chance for recovery here, though it’s usually a long haul. When you're dealing with optic nerve damage, just keep in mind that VEP results tend to bounce back much slower than actual visual acuity.

Yeah, she went through the checkerboard test... It’s a bit of a relief to hear there's still a "possibility" for recovery. That phrase means a lot to me right now. Even though her left eye shows a normal VEP, her actual vision in that eye is only at about 30%.😢
