Lung Hospital in Small town in Ohio

Hey everyone,

So, a buddy of mine ended up in a hospital in a small town in Ohio, and since his family lives overseas, they asked if I could swing by to check on him. I found the hospital's site online ( but I’m totally lost on how to get there using public transit—there doesn't seem to be a direct bus or train line out of Washington, D.C. at all! Does anyone here happen to live in one of those towns near that small town in Ohio who might know which bus routes actually head that way?

Honestly, you're probably better off just calling the bus or train station in Washington, D.C. and asking them directly.

There isn't a direct bus from Washington, D.C. to that Small town in Ohio, and there's no train service either—so, I suppose your options are basically these:
1. You could check the bus connections for a Small town in Indiana, but honestly—it’s a total disaster—I think there's maybe only one departure toward Indiana and one return to Washington, D.C., which would be completely outside of visiting hours, so we should probably just skip straight to option 2.

2. You might want to buy a round-trip ticket to Cleveland; once you arrive in Cleveland, you can ask about a line that goes directly to that Small town in Ohio (passing through the Small town in Indiana)—if that doesn't exist, then just buy a ticket to the Small town in Indiana where you can transfer to the local route. That Small town in Ohio is quite small, so the bus usually stops right in front of the main gate, so it's hard to miss. It takes about an hour and a bit to get to Cleveland, and then from Cleveland to the Small town in Ohio, it's roughly 45 minutes if you catch the direct bus. It's not incredibly complicated, really—it's just that our bus connections are pretty terrible... Good luck!

Has anyone here ever dealt with staying at that sanatorium out in that small town in Ohio? It’s supposed to be a major center for lung diseases.
I heard they also run some kind of assisted living facility there, so I was wondering if anyone knows anyone who’s stayed there? Like, what's the vibe? Are people actually happy with the care...?
Any info at all would be a huge help. My doctor suggested we move my grandma there, but we're really on the fence about it since we don't know much about the place. Plus, it's not exactly a quick trip from where we are in Washington, D.C., so she might end up feeling pretty lonely...

My mom stayed at a facility near a small town in Ohio recently, and honestly, we were pretty impressed. They have this massive yard surrounded by pine trees, and the whole campus feels spacious enough that you don't feel cramped, plus the medical staff there are actually decent people.

So, in the meantime, we actually moved my grandma into a facility in Washington, D.C. We basically realized that a small town in Ohio was just way too far out of reach—like, if anything went sideways, we wouldn't be able to get there fast enough to help.

A family member might need to head there—we’ve heard they’re quite good for pulmonary rehab—but everything I’ve read suggests the patients there are in really rough shape, which sounds difficult to witness...
Since the illness isn't critical in this specific case, our main priority is just finding a safe, steady environment where they can receive consistent care during therapy—regular meals, constant supervision, that sort of thing—so I'm wondering if that facility might be the wrong fit? (especially considering the mental state of someone who isn't severely ill)
Or maybe not?

Has anyone here had any firsthand experience?

Hey there—I was actually supposed to head to that small town in Ohio back when I was 92, but I ended up going to Silver Spring instead because the patients there can be pretty intense. Honestly, it really depends on whether you're looking at care for a child or an elderly person... I'd say the best facility would probably be that one in the small town in Iowa near Washington, D.C., so maybe try reaching out to them to see what they recommend. Good luck!

I’m reviving this old thread because I feel compelled to share my positive experience for anyone who might find themselves needing care near a small town in Ohio.
On Christmas Eve, I was hospitalized there due to a respiratory infection that flared up my asthma.
From the moment I arrived at the ER, everything moved incredibly fast; the technician and doctor were so kind, and they handled my blood work, chest X-ray, and pulmonary function tests in record time.
I was admitted to the first ward under the care of Dr. Vilim Kolarić, who is also my regular specialist for asthma management—an absolutely brilliant physician and a wonderful human being.
The nursing staff on the unit were equally lovely; their professionalism and genuine kindness truly caught me by surprise.
Even the food was surprisingly good! The soups were hearty with plenty of noodles, and every meal was delicious.
The only thing that stood out was that I was the only young person on the floor; every other patient seemed to be over 60.

Everything aligns perfectly with what you explained in your third post—though they might have cut a bus route or two since 2008.
Your best bet is to call Varaždin City Council directly to confirm the schedule for getting to that Small town in Ohio and back. Once you have that settled, the rest of the trip—getting from home to Varaždin and back again—should be easy enough to map out.

My mother is 73 years old and has been battling COPD for 14 years. She is currently being planned for a transfer from her home in a small town in Iowa to a small town in Ohio, where she actually stayed back in 2003.
She’s incredibly frail right now and barely eating anything. To put it bluntly, I’m terrified that once she arrives there, things won't go well. She’s been staying at my house with me and my husband until this Friday, but her condition has deteriorated so much that I’m genuinely afraid we won't be able to care for her here anymore.
Does anyone have any personal experience—or perhaps stories about loved ones—regarding what the current standard of care and facility accommodations are like in that area?
