Cystoscopy: What to expect?

My doctor wants me to get a cystoscopy because I've been dealing with these constant UTIs. Does anyone have some firsthand experience they can share? Like, just how much does it actually suck, and how long does the whole thing usually take... I know the medical definition of what it is, but I'm really looking for your honest, subjective takes 😢

Well, I went last week at a private clinic, and about ten years ago before that, I had one done at a hospital.
Here’s the deal: you feel a tiny sting for maybe a millisecond when they insert the scope. After that, you just lie there, maybe feeling the sensation of your bladder filling up. That’s it—absolutely nothing else. And when they pull the device out, there’s no pain.
Honestly, the only annoying part is that first time you pee afterward where it stings a bit; after that, it's like it never even happened!
I actually bolted during a gastroscopy (literally yanked the endoscope out of the doctor's hand 😢), so compared to having a tube shoved down your throat, a cystoscopy is a total breeze. Don't worry about it!

Is it just as painful when it comes to guys?😲

Are you speaking from experience here? I was actually planning on going in for that same exam myself, and since my urologist keeps insisting it’s painless, I’m wondering if he's actually telling the truth because I honestly don't trust a word that guy says.

So you were there, huh? Look, yeah, he told me it was uncomfortable, but he claimed it didn't actually hurt, which honestly isn't much of a distinction to me... I'm betting it feels way worse than a standard swab... having issues all the way down there is a whole different level of mess🙄

I’ve been through a cystoscopy before, though I went to a private clinic instead of a big public hospital. Honestly, at the hospital, it hurts like crazy, but going private makes a world of difference. It's definitely less painful—it’s more about discomfort than actual pain, if that makes sense.
That said, I did have some issues right after the exam because things were stinging terribly down there. I rushed straight to a pharmacy, picked up a cream, and once I started applying it, I felt much better. My best advice? Just pay extra for the private option so you don't have to suffer.

Right next to me sat this table covered in tools—honestly looked like something out of a medieval Inquisition set or a movie like "Hostel"—with things like surgical shears, pliers, rubber tubing, coiled wires, and these thin metal rods that looked like umbrella ribs. And then they were shoving all that through my anatomy while the nurse held me steady with medical scissors just so I wouldn't flinch. I have to go back tomorrow, and let me tell you, I am not exactly thrilled about it.
But hey, a job's a job, right? Gotta do what you gotta do.

I had my first cystoscopy yesterday—and if the universe is kind, it will be my last—and I have to say, it was easily the most harrowing hospital experience I’ve endured to date. Mind you, I'm currently dealing with a nasty bladder infection and some significant irritation in the urethra, which certainly didn't help, making the whole ordeal excruciatingly painful; I've been seeing blood in my urine for two days now, though thankfully, the intensity has subsided slightly today.
To anyone else facing a cystoscopy: I am crossing my fingers that your experience is significantly less traumatic than mine!
