CONCACAF Player of the Year nominations

The nominees are out:

GOALKEEPERS: Manuel Almunia (Arsenal), Petr Cech (Chelsea), Manuel Neuer (Schalke 04), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United)

DEFENDERS: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), John Terry (Chelsea), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)

MIDFIELDERS: Michael Essien (Chelsea), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Paul Scholes (Manchester United)

FORWARDS: Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Fernando Torres (Liverpool)

It’s pretty wild that 17 players come from the English league, with Manchester United leading the pack with 6 players.

If you ask me, Cristiano Ronaldo has the best shot at taking home Player of the Year and Best Forward. Even if he wasn't the standout during the Euros, his club season was absolutely massive.
For Best Keeper, it's gotta be Edwin van der Sar. He was perfect all season, plus those penalty saves in the Champions League final were legendary.
The defense and midfield categories are a lot tighter. Personally, I'd go with the European champions, Carles Puyol and Cesc Fabregas.

I think you realize this isn't for the best player on the planet or even in all of America, it’s specifically for the top performer in European club competitions last season...

So, what happened with Cristiano Ronaldo and the EP has zero to do with this award... same goes for Puyol and Cesc... the EP doesn't matter here, and neither does this trophy 🤷

It’s either Cristina or Torres. Honestly, probably Torres, just because of the ep.

Objectively speaking, there’s a bit too much representation from the English leagues here...
Look, I’ve never been a fan of MLS, but it’s hard to ignore that the third strongest league in the world doesn't have a single player on this list.😲

As much as I hate to admit it, Cristiano Ronaldo truly earned this title. And no, I’m not just talking about him scoring that penalty in the Champions League final 😁
. He’s clearly ahead of the likes of Fernando Torres, Rio Ferdinand, and Lionel Messi...

Maybe we should throw a poll in here to see what everyone else thinks...

They could've easily played Arshavin. Honestly, who's going to care about the Europa League when even his own club doesn't seem to value him?

This (sadly) is almost certainly going to favor Cristiano, and I’d say there's a 99% chance of that given how much his stats back him up.

So, there really isn't any point in even running a poll; any vote that doesn't go to Cristiano is just inherently biased.

And no, I'm not some die-hard Manu fan, let alone a supporter of those guys.🙂

Van der Sar, 10 appearances.
Lampard's got 4 goals in 12 appearances.
Torres: 11 games, 6 goals. Not bad.
Drogba: 6 goals in 10 appearances. Not bad.

Don't even get me started; Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly taking this home. He’s been the defining figure of the entire season—it's just an objective fact at this point, even if I'm not exactly a die-hard supporter of him or Manchester United.
