My 17-year-old son has been using weed for about two years now—I knew, but honestly, I was too terrified to actually test him and face the reality of what I might find.
Lately, though, things have spiraled. This winter he started hanging out with a much older crowd, and it’s completely gotten out of hand. Nothing we do seems to touch him... everything just keeps getting worse. Between the behavioral shifts, the dark circles under his eyes, and how thin he's become, it's obvious he's moved on to harder substances.
Yesterday, one of his friends stopped by and confirmed my absolute worst fears: he's started using speed, meth, and cocaine.
So, this morning, I picked up one of those all-in-one testing kits from the drugstore—the kind with seven strips that supposedly catches everything. When I handed it to him, he absolutely lost it, stormed out, and refused to do it. He finally came back this afternoon and agreed to sit down for the test. Surprisingly, every single strip came back negative—even for the weed, which I literally saw him smoking just a few days ago. How is that even possible?
If anyone knows anything, please help. What kind of professional testing can I take him to that isn't so easily fooled?

So you brought someone else's urine home? That’s an old-school junkie trick right there. Maybe you should try doing it again, just with a little more self-control next time?

Hmm, looks like you’ve got a massive communication breakdown on your hands. He probably pulled some kind of stunt, like swapping out his sample for someone else's urine. I doubt he's touching cocaine—kids just don't have that kind of cash lying around. Meth or speed is more likely since those synthetics are cheap. But the absolute worst-case scenario—and I really hope this isn't the case—is heroin. That stuff isn't expensive either.

If things are getting this intense, you need to demand his first morning sample and make sure he does it right in front of his dad. That way, there’s zero chance of him faking the results. Honestly, if he has actually moved up to the heavy stuff, that might be for the best because at least you know where you stand. As a parent, marijuana wouldn't even be my main concern unless he's doing it every single day. Everything else is a serious issue...

On the flip side, drugs cost money. So, how is he getting the cash? With a standard allowance, kids can't afford to smoke weed every day. They might have enough for a weekend, but that's it. Anything beyond occasional weekend use is incredibly worrying because nothing is free. This is a total red alert!

That’s precisely the issue—the fact that he’d actually bring someone else's urine into the house just to pull those stunts. He was literally pissing right in front of me, which is why I find the whole thing so unbelievable.
Regarding the money, we've looked into it; he always seems to have cash on hand, even though his allowance never exceeds $100 a month—and lately, it's been even less. Dealing? Maybe.
(Thanks for the help🙂)

So, you’ve got a seventeen-year-old son, and you’ve known he’s been smoking weed for two years now, which was fine until things spiraled out of control

Are you actually serious right now...

Put him under George Orwell's surveillance for a week. That would be something.

Cheap jokes. I don't care about his little habits, though that's fine. But this drug business? Now I'm worried. Brilliant move. Just send him to a monastery and call it a day.
Or hire some heavy hitters to go after him. Once they corner him for a baggie, they should give him such a beating he’ll never even think about pills or anything related to drugs ever again.

Of course, if he's actually an idiot, he'll end up back there immediately. Then all the junkies will finally be behind bars, which is better for everyone. And if anyone wants to argue, they can go find out how much they enjoy being poked in the rear in prison.

Discussion 🤷

I don't see much point in police evaluations—if you already know he's prone to testing boundaries, the results are moot. You can't force him into a psychologist's office if he's digging his heels in.

Just because one of his friends told you something doesn't mean it's gospel. Maybe they were just experimenting. What's he like in school? Does he have a girlfriend? How is your communication with him, generally speaking?

Are you certain he was actually smoking weed?
Kids will do anything when they're backed into a corner.
Maybe he just smoked some oregano; who knows, or maybe the whole thing is being blown out of proportion.
You mentioned his friend claimed he's using everything under the sun.
First off, how would that kid know unless he's right there in the middle of it?
Second, if it's just your son and his buddies talking, they might just be acting tougher than they really are.
Regardless, you need to sit him down and talk.

It is entirely possible he used someone else's urine to cheat the test.

What is his side of the story?

Just go grab a fresh kit and let him pee right in front of you, or maybe he’ll be too embarrassed to do it if his old man is watching.

I think you're facing a serious situation. The moment you felt the need to bring this up here, it became clear that you can't share this burden with your husband. It's incredibly difficult for parents to admit to themselves that their child is an addict, but you aren't alone in this. You can't even begin to imagine the lengths an addict will go to hide their habit just to get more money. If you notice puncture marks—not on the forearm, but between the fingers or on the neck—you need to act immediately. The first step is a rehab center, but ultimately, a residential treatment program is often the most effective route. They show solid results, and there are plenty of reputable options available across the US. You can find them online by searching for therapeutic communities.

He’s probably using, and honestly, so what if you find out he is?
What are you actually going to do about it?

Trust me, talking his ear off won't change a damn thing. All it does is spark some massive, pointless argument that leads absolutely nowhere.
I highly doubt you're actually going to ship your own son off to rehab.

Don't even bother forcing a drug test on him. Instead, grab one of those close friends of his that you actually trust—someone who knows what's really going on—and have a real conversation with them. Let that friend be the one to break it to him. Tell the kid that he’s the only one who can pull his son out of this spiral because he's headed straight for a wreck. Have that friend explain the reality of the situation and, if possible, help steer him away from it. But look, without a major shift, he isn't quitting.

A buddy of mine finally kicked the habit after pulling two years in a federal penitentiary.
Tell him straight up: he’s gambling with your trust. Tell him you don't want a son who's an addict, and make it clear that either he shows up for a monthly drug test until he earns that trust back, or he can pack his bags and get out. Something drastic has to happen. Maybe he'll storm out of the house at first, making a huge scene, but once the dust settles and he's alone—especially if that friend gives him the reality check he needs—that's when it might actually sink in.

if they go straight for the jugular in the middle of the community, let's be clear about that
