Roland Emmerich movies

So, I was rewatching Midway the other day—honestly, it’s easily one of the best things Roland Emmerich has ever put out.

As for the movies from the poll... I'd go with Universal Soldier.

Honestly, I’m just in a foul mood today...
You all have been going on and on about that damn Stargate, and through the fog of memory, I recall catching that piece of junk in a theater a long time ago.
And then, unfortunately, I went and watched it again. Not because it’s just bad, but because it is an absolute disaster—the kind of cinematic garbage that might actually be enjoyable only if someone were to surgically remove my brain, because absolutely nothing in that trash makes a lick of sense.

The whole Stargate thing is fine, I guess. Independence Day was decent—a bit overly sentimental, sure—Godzilla was mediocre at best, and Moonfall isn't actually bad; honestly, it’s probably his least terrible movie.

As for 2012, that wasn't a disaster movie—that movie *was* a disaster. Even the trailer for Midway sounded like total garbage.

Stargate. I simply hold fond memories of that film. The core concept is brilliant, though I believe the execution could have been handled with much greater sophistication.

I can watch Stargate or The Day After Tomorrow without feeling any embarrassment at all. 🕺☕

I have a massive soft spot for Roland Emmerich movies—it’s my ultimate guilty pleasure. But if we’re talking all-time greats, Independence Day is hands down at the top of the list. It’s basically the gold standard for what a big-screen cinematic experience should be.

He knows that too, I think. He leans way more into the visual spectacle. Like, oh wow, an alien ship the size of the Moon, while in the background some old "senile" president manages to hack through all the security systems of an advanced alien prison.

I honestly believe that maybe Independence Day: Resurgence could have been this massive spectacle if it had been handled like, say, the Jack Snyder JL cut.

That movie actually disappointed me the most. It felt like finding out the love of my life just doesn't want me anymore. That deep. I remember getting chills from the destruction scenes in the trailers. I was expecting such a heavy-hitting blockbuster, but what I got was just... mediocre.

For me, that scene where Singapore gets destroyed is the strongest scene ever. No other movie has had that kind of impact on me.

That part where Davidson's dad is racing against time while the leg of the alien ship prepares to crash into the ocean is the second strongest scene I've ever seen in my life. The trailers gave me such intense megalophobia.

It's just a shame the plot is so thin.

I honestly feel like Roland Emmerich’s earlier stuff was so much more than just eye candy and CGI spectacles. Back then, there was actually a genuine sense of humor baked into the movies, and he gave us characters you could actually root for—people you actually cared about. Plus, the pacing? It was spot on. It never felt like it was dragging its feet, but it didn't rush through the story either. It just flowed perfectly.
Honestly, there’s just so much missing lately—and I’m not just talking about the industry at large; I’m talking about his movies, too. It feels like that spark is gone.

I'm all about Independence Day—but just the first one. The sequel is just weird. Not my thing at all.

The Day After Tomorrow... I dig the concept and that whole freezing sequence, but I’ve seen it way too many times. It’s starting to get old.

2012 is actually pretty great.

Once again, after quite a significant hiatus, I found myself watching "Stargate" on TV last night. It was, I suppose, a rather lovely and engaging spectacle. I find that I truly miss those kinds of movies and that specific cinematic atmosphere characteristic of the 90s. Modern films seem to me to be visually overdone, and as for the clunky, poorly written scripts, well, I don't even need to mention them.

Stargate is such a cool movie. It actually had some genuine originality and creativity to it—which is rare these days. It’s a total bummer they never gave us a proper sequel... Spader and old-school Kurt were such a solid duo.

Independence Day is basically a masterclass in how to craft a massive blockbuster.
