Sperm banks for cancer patients

Since I'm dealing with lymphoma and facing chemo, I need to know if sperm banking is an option here in the States. From what I've gathered, it should be doable at the Mayo Clinic in Washington, D.C., but does anyone have leads on other facilities? Even looking at options in Canada would work.

Mayo Clinic. Just a heads up: don't head over there right after getting a CT scan or an MRI with contrast, because that stuff will wipe out your sperm count for a few days.

The logic behind a CT scan makes sense to me, but I'm struggling to see how an MRI—whether you're using contrast or going without—has anything to do with sperm counts.

There wasn't an MRI involved here, just the contrast agent. That stuff is radioactive, which means it can damage or even kill off sperm cells. A friend of mine actually went through this exact same situation as analogtiger98 and ended up at the Mayo Clinic; his sperm count plummeted because of the contrast, making him ineligible for IVF.

I suppose I should revisit this topic. What does it actually take to have sperm cryopreserved? Specifically, I’m wondering if there’s some sort of medical prerequisite—do you have to be suffering from a specific condition just to qualify? And beyond the Mayo Clinic we discussed earlier, are there other facilities available? Does one have to shell out a significant amount of money for this? Furthermore, how long can they realistically keep it on ice, and are these storage methods truly reliable in the long run? Personally, I’m looking into this because my athletic pursuits involve a rather high risk of... well, losing my testicles—and I have a very strong desire—nay, an absolute necessity—to have children someday eventually.😉

Well, you could be looking at professional cycling... 🤷 It's true that you can face infertility due to steroid abuse in just about any high-stakes athletic endeavor, though it is statistically much less common for that damage to be permanent; in most cases, it tends to be a temporary setback... 👍

Look, I haven't exactly done a deep dive into the fine print, so I can't give you the specifics, but I do know that whatever you're looking for is covered under that federal law.
