Schumacher only actually raced 14 out of 16, and he got disqualified twice in those 14.

So Hill actually lost by 41 points, not just 1.

At the end of the day, you just look at the final standings—that erratic Benetton era wasn't really Hill's burden to bear. That was all before Flavio stepped in. Hill ended up losing out by a single point.

edit: Honestly, that Flavio guy always seemed to be running some kind of scheme.

Yeah, sure—so he finished with one less point after 16 races compared to Schumacher's 14. And don't even get me started on those disqualifications across 12 races.

Also, two of Benetton's losses had nothing to do with an illegal car. It was just some rule-breaking at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where they overtook Hill during the warm-up lap. It didn't affect the actual start or the race at all since they lined up normally from P2 while Hill took P1.

I’ve got a feeling Fio was probably tearing apart the Benetton chassis down to the last bolt—just because they couldn't find some specific parts elsewhere.

They never actually removed a single screw from the Benetton. Nobody at Fio is going to find software by unscrewing hardware.

Back then, if you wanted to get to the software, you first had to secure the connector to the board...
and to do that, you’d have to unscrew the bolt and the connector cover before you could screw the D-SUB RS-232 connector into the board. 😁
