My husband just got a referral for an endocrinologist, and we’re both wondering what he can actually expect during the appointment. He's a bit nervous about the whole thing... we didn't think they'd be such a headache 🙂
Aside from the actual semen analysis, they also ran some full andrology workups on me. It’s basically a sperm count plus bloodwork to check hormone levels. They didn't prescribe any treatment, though, since it hasn't been two years since my radiation therapy. I get why your husband might be nervous, but honestly, you have to look at this as totally routine. These doctors do this every single day; it’s just another Tuesday for them. He’ll probably just get a quick physical exam so the doctor can note everything looks normal in terms of size and shape. Look, plenty of guys have gone through the exact same thing with me, and I’m still standing. Sure, it’s a little awkward—especially if there’s a med student shadowing—but they aren't going to bite. As for worrying about bad results? You can't change what's written in stone. Stressing out will only make everything feel worse.
Anyway, here’s my story—maybe it’ll make you guys feel a little better.🙂))
Two years ago, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and they had to remove my left one. I headed over to see Vuk Vrhovec to freeze some sperm before starting radiation. Then the doctor tells me, "You've got twenty." I look at him like, twenty what? Twenty million? Twenty pieces? He deadpans, "Twenty pieces, man." I almost lost it laughing right there, but then he tells me that amount is basically useless. After the radiation, I went back for a checkup. He tells me I’ve only got seven pieces visible in the window. On top of that, my FSH levels are high, which apparently means there's a 90% chance the tissue in my remaining testicle is permanently trashed. I asked if there was any way to fix it, and he just said no. Honestly, I don't even know how to process it anymore. I've become so numb to these lab results that I find myself almost waiting for the next one just to see if things can actually get worse. Last summer, I tried to clear my head by cycling from Chicago all the way to the Barrier, then caught a boat to San Francisco and looped back toward Chicago. It was quite the trip. 932 miles Ten days of riding, then back for another sperm count a week later. And the results? Total madness. They told me 200,000 per milliliter—or whatever that metric was—but somehow the total came out to around 7 or 8 million in the whole sample. I looked the doctor straight in the eye and asked, "How is that even possible?" He just shrugged and basically admitted he had no clue. I even asked if they’d mixed up my samples, but he insisted that while technically possible, it's extremely unlikely. Since then, I've been hitting the bike and running constantly. Back in November, I went in again and the numbers were even weirder—barely 0.5 million per ml—so they ran more hormone tests to figure out what was going on. Now I'm booking another appointment for May, and honestly, I'm dying to see what kind of nonsense they come up with next.
The bottom line here is that neither you nor your husband need to spiral. Honestly, just getting some exercise in and cleaning up the diet might do the trick. My doctor actually told me that if these sperm counts stay where they are, we won't even have to look into IVF!🙂Maybe there’s some truth to that old saying: God works in mysterious ways.🙂Anyway, I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck and hope you guys have a blast hanging out here!🙂Your husband and you, obviously!🙂))) And honestly, the results might just show up when you least expect them!
