It’s supposed to be on the intestinal passage! Has anyone here actually gone through this? What does the procedure actually entail? Thanks.

Small Bowel Series

- A radiological contrast exam used to visualize the small intestine.
Patients need to arrive fasting—you can't eat anything for at least 8 hours before the test, and
you shouldn't drink anything for at least 4 hours prior. The process kicks off by drinking a contrast solution that travels through
the esophagus and stomach until it reaches the small intestine. From there, imaging is performed at set intervals while the patient is lying down.

How long this takes depends entirely on how fast the contrast moves through those intestinal loops, so for some patients, the whole procedure
can stretch out for several hours.

Actually, I’m pretty sure tomorrow is the final shoot.

The setup they used was actually pretty wild—you’re sitting on this machine where the technician just tilts you around to get the right angle for the scans. One second you're lying flat, the next you're upright without even moving... felt like a damn carnival ride. Only downside was swallowing that chalky stuff, but honestly, just think of it as tasteless kids' syrup. And don't freak out if things look a little pale for the next two days; you'll basically be stocked up on calcium for life 😁
Oh, and one more thing—I'm sure you're getting hit with a decent dose of radiation. But hey, I had an X-ray on my knee and chest back in a month, so I wasn't exactly glowing in the dark 😁

So, what did you guys actually do? I’ve been thinking about running those same tests myself. What kind of symptoms were you dealing with?

I’ve been through the imaging pass myself. It’s really nothing to lose sleep over—even that contrast liquid isn't half bad to swallow. You might pick up a tiny bit of extra radiation, though. From what I gathered, while you're lying there on that rotating table, the X-ray is running the whole time. At one point, I caught a glimpse of the monitor and saw my own intestines moving—that was my cue that they were constantly filming. They gave me a lead apron to cover my vital organs, so hopefully, there won't be any lasting issues. :-)

I had the pass done right before they connected my ileostomy. They just wanted to make sure there weren't any obstructions left in the way.

Man, Lisa Moore7, I’m still tripping over why some weird light was leaking out from your part of town, when really it was just you glowing in the dark from all that radiation 🙂

Anyway, I'm heading in for a routine endoscopy tomorrow just so the docs can tell me I need to actually eat regular, healthy meals, chill out more, and stop being so hard on my stomach.

Man, where have you been hiding? Haven't heard a peep from you in like a hundred years... guess I gotta shed some light on this... 😁

Let me know how it went since I finally got my referral yesterday... just want to know what to expect. You going through the VA or seeing someone private? If it's the first one—how long did you wait after signing up? If it's private—what's the damage in dollars...

Quick checkup this morning at Smith’s clinic up in the Appalachian region (near Des Moines). $100 A little bit of prep, some tears, and eyes stinging like crazy—I skipped the contacts by default—all wrapped up in about 20 minutes.

Swallow, swallow, breathe, breathe... swallow, just a little more, almost there... done. :-)

Hiatal hernia and GERD.
Couldn't really wait for an appointment because honestly, I’d probably be diagnosed with esophageal cancer before they actually called me back from internal medicine.

No indication for H. pylori testing, so we didn't bother with that.

As for that pitch-black coffee over in Tucson, can't complain about it one bit.

If you're feeling "bored," go ahead and dive into this diagnostic search. Guaranteed entertainment!
Anyway, I'm a young dad now, so I've mostly moved on to other subforums. 🙂
