I mean, I was already a massive fan of Helen Mirren, but after seeing this movie? I’m officially adding her to my list of absolute icons... the woman is pure perfection!

Great movie.

Helen Mirren totally deserved that Oscar.
rustyscout31 said:The movie is absolutely fantastic, and Helen Mirren is just incredible! She truly deserves an Oscar for this performance. I was actually a little worried that the scenes involving Princess Diana might lean too hard into being overly sentimental or feel like a cheap tribute to Lady Diana, but the director handled the whole situation regarding her passing and the funeral so beautifully.

I am just left wondering why they chose to portray the handsome Prince Charles III as such a decent guy. And one more thing... I had no idea the British Prime Minister held that much sway over the Queen...

That specific scene with the deer... hmm... was the Queen feeling a sense of guilt over Princess Diana, or were they trying to suggest she cares more about a wounded animal than she did about the late Princess Diana??

I don't know, I actually thought they portrayed him as a bit of a screw-up.

I’m genuinely glad that at least one Oscar (assuming I actually find the guy relevant) ended up in the hands of such a sophisticated, talented, and truly impressive lady—I mean it with nothing but pure respect! 🙏 (Fine, let me toss this in there too, hopefully for the first and last time)

I have no reason to doubt the acting prowess of Helen Mirren, and she likely earned her Oscar given her sheer talent (though I haven't actually sat down to watch the film yet—I'll have to consider that possibility). However, I cannot shake the nagging thought that she essentially cast a vote for herself. As an Academy member, she openly remarked that she would never forgive herself if she missed out on the Oscar, and it's quite possible that her own vote was the deciding factor in her victory.
Truly appalling.

Sure, she might be an Academy member, but I highly doubt anyone would actually vote in a category where they're nominated—and honestly, I don't think the rules even allow it! That would be such a disaster and just completely un-American. We have to remember that the USA, no matter what people think of them, is still a nation of laws!

She actually went on record admitting she voted for herself. Well, at least we have that much honesty to work with.
To be honest, my understanding of America as a nation governed by the rule of law comes primarily from Hollywood movies and TV dramas; whether that holds true in reality is something I still find myself questioning.

Helen Mirren was absolutely phenomenal—truly top-tier—but as for the actual story? It was a bit of a mess. Honestly, if it hadn't been for her incredible performance and sheer talent, this whole thing could have easily been dismissed as just another piece of Hollywood trash.

Cheers to you! Over those few years I spent there, I really did get the vibe that things actually run by the book. Now, look—I'm definitely not a lawyer, so I can't give you a legal breakdown or anything, but just speaking as an everyday citizen and someone who's been in the business world? That was my take on it.

Personally, I think everyone nominated gets a vote for themselves every single year—they just don't admit it... 😉And honestly, that says something about Helen, plus the fact that she almost certainly knew she was getting the Oscar even without her own vote.

Anyway, I finally watched the movie yesterday. Even though I'm totally fascinated by the British Royal Family and have followed everything happening with them religiously, I found the movie BORING! It's such a shame, because you guys caught the most media-intense week in UK history ever (not even gonna mention those terrorist attacks) and turned it into an unwatchable hour and 45 minutes... 👎
If it wasn't for Helen Mirren's perfect—absolutely perfect—acting, I would've shut it off halfway through. And mind you, I'm the kind of person who WATCHED the funeral and bought all those books about Princess Diana that came out after...

Helen is truly an acting goddess. Just the other night I was saying she probably portrayed Elizabethan emotions way better than the actual Elizabeth did, but everything else... 👎

3/10 + deserved Oscar! (Glad I didn't buy a movie theater ticket...)

Apparently Helen didn't even bother wearing underwear under that dress, which is just one more little detail to round out her true character. 😉
And hey, if she decided to vote for herself, who cares? It’s still better than some Academy voting posthumously after 125 years.

Dennis Green62 said:This movie is basically just slickly packaged propaganda for a fading monarchy and one of the worst US presidents in history. They try to win you over with those touching little scenes—you know, where he’s making calls from some modest apartment while kids are running around and his wife is just there with the leftovers from lunch.
Technically speaking, the film looks polished, which—given how much money gets thrown at digital effects and massive budgets these days—is actually somewhat impressive

I'm not going to sit here and read the rest, but I would gladly sign my name to this sentiment...

matter of taste

I actually enjoyed it. It was interesting seeing how the Queen lives—like, she drives her own car, follows those specific protocols, and even does picnics out in nature. Reminded me of lunches at my grandparents' cabin.
Plus, the whole sequence of events involving Princess Diana was gripping.
It isn't an action flick, it's a drama.
It was great seeing recent history played out on screen.
And learning some facts the media didn't emphasize much back then—like how the flag wasn't flown at half-mast when Royal Family members passed away.

Yeah, sure. But I guess for some people, boring classics like The Godfather are "masterpieces" while unwatchable, soul-crushing slogs are considered top-tier cinema.

To movie was a total letdown. It’s just way too many clips from old shows and magazines about Princess Diana that we’ve all seen a thousand times already. Plus, the pacing? Definitely dragging.

Well, I didn't realize the Prime Minister had such a tight grip on the Queen either—let alone that he’d be breaking out in a cold sweat just from receiving a phone call from her. Honestly, I’m still not buying it.

I mean, Helen Mirren is fantastic, and the rest of the cast is solid too—no arguments there—but does anyone actually care about these events? What was the point? The story feels way too niche (by which I mean it seems like something only an Englishman would find gripping) and it has that vibe of a Sunday afternoon TV movie...

I can see why it got nominated, though. Still, I’d have picked United 93 over this any day. But hey, to each their own... 🙂

Good grief, look at this comment section...
Who actually gives a damn about the events depicted in United 93? By that same flawed logic, shouldn't that movie only be interesting to Americans (and maybe other "terrorist"-prone nations)?🙄

I’m a little confused by the logic there—how does a British production qualify as "Hollywood trash"?

That said, my take on the film aligns with what most of you are saying: the movie is decent, but Helen is nothing short of brilliant. 🙂

And the King (well, Prince Philip) is a total legend too. What a character, and those observations he makes about the situation... pure gold. 🤣
