So, I was doing a bit of deep cleaning around the house the other day—you know, that satisfying feeling when you finally tackle the junk drawers—and I ended up going through my medicine cabinet. It got me thinking: what should actually be in a standard home first-aid kit?
What’s sitting in your cabinets right now, and how often are you actually reaching for them? I know some people have these massive stashes of random pills and creams they grab whenever they feel a sniffle coming on, but honestly, having too much of the wrong stuff can actually cause more trouble than it's worth.

Here is what I’ve got on hand (and I have to admit, I’m mostly "responsible" for this collection because my mom still treats me like a kid sometimes... 😉): I have plain Aspirin and the effervescent kind, Tylenol, and some generic acetaminophen—I usually prefer the capsules over the tablets, they just seem to work better for me. I also have Bayer and some multi-symptom cold meds like Virolex, and I think that’s pretty much the lot. As for cough syrups or expectorants, I just pick those up as needed depending on how bad things get.

I usually just grab some Advil and coffee to deal with the pain, maybe some Alka-Seltzer Plus if I feel a cold or the flu lurking in the background. I’ll also toss in some of that Virolex cream you mentioned for the herpes stuff, plus my usual vitamins, minerals, and ginkgo. Beyond that? I just play it by ear and buy whatever I need based on how I'm feeling or what a recipe calls for.

I’ve always had this weird aversion to all those vitamins and minerals you see everywhere... I can't quite put my finger on why. If anything, maybe during cold and flu season, I'll grab a fizzy multivitamin or some Vitamin C at the drugstore.

Oh, and I also keep some NeoAngin on hand for when my throat starts acting up.

My main go-to is Bayer 😁

I've also got some ibuprofen, Tylenol, and B-complex on hand. I think there’s a few other things in the cabinet, but nothing else really matters right now 😁

I don't keep a medicine cabinet full of stuff. I just hand over any unused meds to my family doctor so they can pass them along to people who are struggling to afford them.

I’ve always got some Tylenol, Advil, or Voltaren on hand, plus some antibiotics—usually Amoxicillin. I also keep some muscle rub around for when I mess up my ankle.

What do you guys keep on hand, and how often do you use them? I know people tend to stockpile all sorts of random pills and creams just because they feel like it, but that can actually be pretty dangerous...

Here’s my stash (my mom is mostly responsible for this, since I'm still a bit of a kid... 😉 ). I have basic Aspirin, both regular and effervescent, Tylenol, and some Lupocet tablets and capsules—the capsules work better for me. Then there's Bayer, Virolex, and I think that’s about it. For cough syrups or expectorants, I just pick something up whenever the need arises.

Well, we have everything mentioned above. On top of that, I’m constantly restocking my "pharmacy" with throat lozenges (that sage one from AngiSept is great), sinus creams I get from herbalists, and... yeah, that's really it.
As for your question about what you *should* have... hmm... honestly, the more the merrier! 👍

I keep a full medicine cabinet at home, plus a dedicated little first aid kit I carry whenever I’m heading out to explore caves or trekking through remote, rugged terrain. I actually kept a lot of my heavy-duty supplies from my time traveling through Vietnam, where I had to be prepared for just about anything—everything from Tramal and antibiotics to sterile needles and syringes.

For the house, I usually just stick to the basics: aspirin, Voltaren, and all my usual allergy pills and sprays.
When I'm out in the mountains, though, things get more serious. I pack the essentials: Voltaren, Tramal (just in case someone gets stuck in a cave and help is hours away), Ventolin, antihistamines, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic spray, and even emergency contraception 😁 (you know, just in case things go sideways in the middle of nowhere 😁 )...

That’s pretty gutsy.

I honestly barely managed to get all that Tramal out of my house—felt like it was getting a little too "sketchy" for me, call me crazy...

I always keep Pfizer, ibuprofen, amoxicillin or whatever leftover antibiotics I have from previous infections 😬, allergy meds (usually two or three different kinds), anti-itch creams for bug bites, Tylenol, and nasal spray on hand. That’s basically my kit. 🙂 However, my grandmother has a heart condition and has been taking phenobarbital for nearly 30 years, along with various other prescriptions for bone density and blood pressure, so my house is essentially a miniature pharmacy. 😉

I was just relieved to finally toss all my Tramadol out of the house. I feel like it’s a little too "risky" to have lying around, call me crazy if you want...

It’s not really about being "brave." I don't take them myself, and I never have. My GP gave me a supply once when I was heading out on a six-week trip through Asia where medical facilities are pretty hard to come by.
But look, if you end up breaking your leg in a ravine hundreds of feet underground and you're waiting half a day for rescue, having something on hand to help someone else can be a lifesaver...

Aspirin, various vitamins and minerals, ibuprofen, Praxiten, Voltaren, magnesium, caffeine capsules (since my blood pressure runs low), topical injury creams like Deep Relief, Flexamin Complex... some leftover antibiotics... and I absolutely have to have Uvin-H tea because my bladder is acting up.

I really hope you guys are actually checking your expiration dates and tossing those old meds into the pharmacy's disposal bin instead of letting them sit there. 😉

I carry around this little little baggie filled with my essentials, mostly just some Advil, Knavon, Voltaren, and Reglan, along with some eye drops and a steady supply of Vitamin C, which seems to be about all I ever need! 😁
I usually just pick up anything else as the situation arises.

Hmm, honestly, I don’t even know if my local CVS even carries one of those green bins...😕
(well, you know how it is in a small town like this...)

According to the law, they’re required to have...
The only real issue is what a pharmacy actually does with those expired meds, since there isn't a single compliant disposal site or incinerator in the US that meets the strict regulations... but honestly, that's a headache for the pharmacy to deal with, not us. 😉
