SCANDAL IN THE USA: Lens solution recalled, but still sitting on shelves here
Is ReNu a threat to your vision?
By Lada Novak
You can still find ReNu contact lens solution from the American manufacturer Bausch & Lomb at local optical shops, even though health authorities in the USA have issued warnings about potential health risks. Following reports that 109 patients across 17 US states developed a rare eye infection over the last six months, investigators are looking into whether ReNu—which most of those patients were using—is the culprit.

This specific type of infection can cause sudden vision loss; for some, an emergency cornea transplant might be the only thing standing between them and blindness. Ronald L. Zarrella, the CEO of Bausch & Lomb, stated on Monday that while they haven't proven ReNu is harmful, the company has "voluntarily recalled US shipments in the interest of public health" until a final conclusion is reached.

Local opticians stocking ReNu say they weren't aware of the decision and claim they've never had quality issues with the product. Despite the scale of the scandal, representatives for Optinov, the US distributor for Bausch & Lomb, have declined to comment on the situation for now.

I caught a segment on ABC tonight. Apparently, they’re claiming our ReNu isn't actually linked to the American version since it's manufactured over in Italy. Does it really matter though? At the end of the day, I'm sticking with the Complete formula regardless.

I shared this news with a friend of mine who works as a pharmacist. She told me she hasn't heard anything funnier in ages and warned me not to believe every single thing I read online. I think I'll run it by my ophthalmologist too, though I have a feeling I already know how he'll react. 😉

It feels like they’re constantly getting dragged into some new scandal, doesn't it?
I’ve been sticking with ReNu for five years now, honestly. I tried switching over to Complete once just to see what would happen, and oh my god, it was a disaster—my lenses felt like sandpaper and my eyes were just incredibly dry. Total nightmare.

I sometimes wonder if it's all just manufactured drama between big pharma companies...

I have been using ReNu for five years now.

I have used it for four years and am completely satisfied. 🙂 That is why I was so genuinely surprised by what I read online...
