Just one thought... the film felt like an overwhelming sensory assault. 😍

Before diving into the movie, I actually read The Man Who Walked the Line—that biography by Steven Turner. Because of that, the film felt a little too simplified for someone as layered as Johnny was, but hey, still enjoyed it. It’s a movie, right? And Joaquin... man, I was a total wreck by the end of it. 😍 Also, Elvis—good grief—if I hadn't read up on the history, I might have actually wondered who that guy was. 🙂

I honestly loved everything that Phoenix and Witherspoon sang 😉

I initially thought the guy was a total dud, but he actually bears a striking resemblance to him...
He isn't quite as handsome as Elvis Presley, but he definitely shares that look...
At the end of the day, the movie is about Cash, so there’s no way they’re going to shove some polished Elvis Presley into the mix.

He absolutely nailed the acting, the singing, and just threw in that signature swagger he’s got in spades.
And she isn't half bad either.
The movie's a blast. Honestly, it could’ve been way better if they leaned harder into certain themes—especially the stuff that really hits home for true Cash fans.
It feels a little bit like a compromise, you know? Like they tried to make it accessible for people who don't know a thing about Cash. For instance, the ending feels a bit over-the-top, and some parts feel a bit watered down or just skimmed over the surface... But man, there are some killer scenes: the intro is 👍 👍 👍, which is way more powerful than the finale (the editing is pure genius, plus one of the best songs ever); and then that prison performance... you can really feel that "chemistry" between those two, especially when they're singing together and all.
Again, it's worth the watch just for Phoenix. Seriously, man, you really put the work in.
But I reckon if you haven't spent much time listening to Cash, you might not totally catch that specific feeling.

I just finished watching the movie. Personally, I loved it... there was this undeniable chemistry between them during the musical numbers. And man, they can really sing! 🙏
It’s true, the film doesn't cover every single detail, but it’s pretty clear the director focused heavily on Johnny-esque life back when Johnny was absolutely burning with desire for June Carter leading up to '68.
I’ve known about Cash for a long time. To me, he always felt like one of those classic characters you see in old Westerns—just this wise, rugged old cowboy type with a guitar, standing out against the landscape... but I had no idea he was *that* crazy about June... it was intense!
And the end of the Oscar race: Joaquin 😍 and Reese. 😁

Also, Elvis looks like a literal baby here... he was only three years younger than Cash. Not that I care, really, but they could have cast someone a bit more handsome who actually knows how to move their hips and knees a little better... 😍

Does anyone know where I can find that song Time ’s a wasting —you know, the very first one Johnny & June sang together? It isn't one of Johnny's solo tracks... and I've been searching all over the internet but I just can't seem to track it down..

It’s essentially a movie about June Carter.🙂 She has this presence—so strong and charismatic that she completely commands the screen, arguably more than Joaquin Phoenix does.

As for the plot itself, there isn't much that hasn't been done before.

But that dynamic between Carter & Cash? That’s the real deal. It’s beautifully executed, though I won't claim to know how accurate it is since I didn't know much about June Carter going in.

I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan, so this movie was a mandatory watch for me. In a way, it follows a similar trajectory to Ray—childhood struggles, the rise to fame, the drug spiral, and eventually hitting that peak where life starts feeling hollow despite the legendary hits... though I actually preferred this one.

Sure, the female lead was great, but give Joaquin Phoenix some credit, people! Honestly, the way he nails the performance is unreal (and let’s face it, he looks the part too). From the head movements to the way he handles the guitar, everything works—even his voice is spot on (it would’ve been a nightmare if he had to mimic the older, deeper tone Cash used later in his career). He did a solid job, though I think certain people missed an opportunity to add more details to make him feel even more like Mr. Black.

They both deserved an Oscar, seriously...

Anyway, highly recommended. Just a heads-up: if you're a massive Cash devotee like me, be careful not to end up like I did—looping through just three of his songs on repeat. 😛

I’ve been hearing a whole lot of noise lately about how Joaquin Phoenix is "overacting"... and honestly, I think that’s just what people say when they haven't actually sat down and watched the raw, unfiltered energy of a true Johnny-esque performance before. It’s easy to criticize if you don't get it, but I find myself nodding along with Kyle Green3 on this one—he absolutely nailed the imitation, from those specific little gestures down to the way he handles the guitar...
As for Reese... 😍

Man, I can't even wrap my head around how they picked those two leads, but honestly? They absolutely nailed it.
I'm just bummed that Joaquin didn't take home the Best Actor Oscar, and they totally passed over Reese after all that nonsense she pulled at the awards show... 🙄
I have to say, the singing actually caught me off guard. It was surprisingly good. 👍
And yeah, I'll admit, I had a few genuine laughs too. 😁
All in all, I'm happy with it. 🙂

It’s funny, I didn't even hear much about her until I sat down to watch Walk the Line. I was actually a little let down when I realized she was a Harvard blonde, but then again... 😁

Sorry, but you clearly haven't watched many movies.
Reese is a fantastic actress. Take the movie Election from about seven or eight years ago—she was already brilliant in that role alongside Matthew Broderick. Lately, she’s leaned a bit too hard into playing the airhead, specifically those "Harvard blonde" types, but even then, she nails the performance perfectly.
Phoenix is. 👍 Actor.

Sure. Looking at those two movies, you might actually walk away thinking the foolproof recipe for becoming a superstar is to have your brother suffer a tragic fate in childhood and spend the rest of your life drowning in guilt.

As for the film itself, I only have two thoughts:
- It forced me to dig out Cash's CDs and actually start playing them more often.

So, I won't bother overanalyzing how much of a shallow, polished, and boring biopic it is. 😬

I haven't actually sat down to watch Election yet, so you're probably right on that one... I really ought to track it down and give it a look sometime soon. As for Joaquin Phoenix, I've always had a pretty decent opinion of him anyway...👍
