With like a $10,000 budget, you basically have a full-on movie studio—which, at worst, is just half the price of a tiny little economy car! That’s why fan films today can actually hold their own against Hollywood originals... You save up a bit, or maybe grab a small loan, and suddenly you can whip up something like Matrix or produce pro-level DVDs in HDTV quality.
Check out some Star Wars fan films (the creators swear by Final Cut Pro):
http://www.theforce.net/fanfilms/It honestly baffles me why there aren't more independent productions out there. Back in the day, you needed millions, but nowadays? You only need thousands—unless, of course, you're trying to pull off a massive spectacle with thousands of animated characters happening all at once, then you'd need to sink a few tens of thousands into things like:
http://www.apple.com/xserve/The absolute genius breakthrough with Final Cut is that you can edit your video on a laptop in low res, head home, move the project over to a beefy workstation, and render everything out in high quality.
Sure, there are tools for Windows and open-source options for various *nix systems, but let's be real—Apple totally dominates the multimedia market, and that's definitely not an accident. Man, if only I had the talent, the patience, and the actual skills to make movies... I'd dive straight into making a remake of those old sci-fi flicks about people living in smoggy cities with Martians (you know, the ones where they contact aliens using Ivelia Ultra), but I'd give it that Matrix or Star Wars edge. Or maybe an adaptation of those mystical folk tales... Or even a horror flick about the Black Queen Erody (like a local American Dracula 😈 🙂 😱 )...
