The most tragic cinematic hero of all time

If you ask me, Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise is just... wow. They’ve squeezed four movies out of her and now they’re pushing for a fifth? Poor woman is constantly fighting for her life across the galaxy.

She spends half the time frozen and thawing out like a slab of meat. To make matters worse, she lost her entire family, along with everyone else she ever cared about.

She even went and jumped on the latest sci-fi bandwagon by becoming some kind of GMO hybrid. In a small town in the Midwest, people would have absolutely torn her apart. 😁 Seriously, as if things couldn't get any darker, she ends up becoming a literal crossbreed with her worst enemy.

She killed her own daughter. She even killed her own grandchild on their birthday.

It’s like she showed up in New York City a couple of centuries too late.

And yeah, obviously, the most exhausting part: there's never any peace. She's always being hunted by those slimy black cockroaches, chasing her down like Wile E. Coyote chasing Road Runner.

Ben Stiller shows up in basically every movie. A total loser, plain and simple. 👍

I still remember how much of a shock it was seeing Steve Buscemi pop up in Ghost World. I mean, I already knew he had this niche for playing losers and total outsiders, but when he walked into that fifties-style bar looking all disheveled and slumped over in a baggy sweater... 😲

...well, at least he managed to hit on an eighteen-year-old girl afterward. 😁

Jason Voorhees... seriously, they’ve killed him off eleven times already, and yet nobody has ever actually bothered to try and understand him...

The guy is just an misunderstood sociopath; give him a cabin by a lake, a machete or some garden tool, and a pile of clueless teenagers... and honestly, who wouldn't be happy?

Is he really that unreasonable...?

Robert De Niro is such a solid choice in "Night and the City"—it’s actually painful to watch, knowing exactly how it ends while he pours so much energy into it.

Then there's Daryl Hannah in "The last day of Franky Muha"... even though Hopper manages to escape, her fate is so tragic you just want to take out Michael Madsen. 😕 Hmm, I suppose that was part of Hopper's plan... Still, my heart goes out to Daryl.

...Boško Buha...and then there's that salt at the end 🙂 🙂 ....he finally gets his salt, only to be betrayed and killed by those local traitors...😢

Comparing The Ring to LOTR

He’s the protagonist for the entire story, yet he’s barely on screen. He spent most of his existence in terrible conditions—stuck underwater or rotting in a cave. Everyone is constantly fighting over him, yet he remains elusive. For an entire cinematic era, he’s just hiding in some Hobbit's hair, only to end up meeting a miserable death in a fire.

Man, he put in so much work—all those expressions, the physical comedy, the way he could just mock a situation without saying a word... He was truly the comedian of the century. It’s such a wild mix of being totally one-of-a-kind yet somehow deeply tragic at the same time. The biggest kicker with his silent films? They robbed him of the one thing that matters most: he never actually got to use his VOICE!😢

So, I recently picked up the Alien Quadrilogy. 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 It was an absolute disaster. Honestly, I’ll never forgive myself for dropping $150 on that set.

Anyway, Norman Bates is everything to me—probably the greatest performance ever put on film.🙂

I mean, maybe Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2 is actually a bit of a tragic figure—kind of like those Shakespearean heroes, I guess... especially at the end when he's sacrificing himself in the molten metal... 😢 😢 😢

Michael Caine—perhaps delivering his absolute best performance in Little Voice—plays a true loser.
