As far as its purpose goes, it’s about ghosts, atmosphere, sound design, and all that. Gothika actually manages to pull off being a horror thriller. It isn't exactly Sherlock Holmes level, but for a ghost story, it's decent enough.
It helps if there's some sort of logic involved—or at least a sense of meaning beyond just mindless popcorn flick territory. This one felt pretty pointless to me, even if the opening was okay. I hate feeling bored when watching horror, regardless of the subgenre.
The movie just... started dragging after the first thirty minutes.
For example, I actually felt that genuine sense of unease (plus some weird chills toward the end) while watching "The Audition" by Takashi Miike. That kind of creepy, unsettling vibe can be found in much better films. Or at least... more solid ones. 😉
