Sorry for crashing the thread, but I’ve got a quick question for you guys:

Does anyone know how to actually soften up hair? Mine is just—well, it's super stiff, thick, coarse, and honestly kind of stubborn... Any ideas on what might work? Maybe a specific shampoo, a deep conditioner, some mousse...?

Thanks

So, I’ve got a bit of a situation with my hair. It’s incredibly stubborn—super thick, coarse, and just completely refuses to cooperate. It’s like it has its own personality and decided today that being rigid is its only goal. Does anyone have any actual advice on how to soften this stuff up? I’m looking for anything that actually works: a specific shampoo, a solid deep conditioner, maybe a mousse or some kind of smoothing cream? I need something that can actually tame this mess. Any suggestions?

Thanks

If you look over on the women's forums, you'll see people talking about this constantly. Personally, my routine is pretty set: I use hair masks based on flaxseed oil and load up on silk proteins. It’s all about that combination—a solid shampoo, a good deep conditioner, and then hitting it with the silk. Simple as that. 👍

Look, here’s the reality: those conditioners, hair masks, and all that heavy-duty treatment stuff? They do exactly what they claim—they soften the hair and add a nice shine—but there's a massive trade-off. They absolutely kill your volume. It weighs everything down. I’m honestly not sure if that’s actually going to help you if you're dealing with hair that has a mind of its own and refuses to cooperate. 😉😁

Yeah, I used to wash mine daily too, and then I ended up getting seborrheic dermatitis. It might not even be caused by that—from what I understand, it’s mostly idiopathic—but that’s just how it went for me. Now, I stick to washing three times a week.

Well, I don't think it's exactly ideal to wash it daily. That said, people living in big cities—since cities are filthy and there's so much dust and pollution in the air—often find their hair gets dirty so fast they end up washing it twice a day.🙄 Too much of a good thing is still too much, I suppose. Personally, I just wash mine every two or three days, sometimes even longer.😲

I wouldn't say washing your hair too often is a bad thing—honestly, if you don't, excess sebum builds up at the roots, clogs everything up, and messes with your microcirculation. Then, before you know it, you're dealing with hair loss. A total nightmare! I know the urge to wash constantly is real, but every single shampoo I’ve tried so far has been a complete bust. Now I'm thinking about trying some retinoid derivatives to see if that does the trick—otherwise, I might just have to accept this constant struggle!

imrsa1 said:I happened to stumble upon this kids' shampoo, and honestly, it’s worked well for me. Even my relatives who live nearby seem to like it. It's just the Johnson baby shampoo—either the honey version, the regular one, or the wheat germ one. A few people used it to get rid of dandruff, and personally, it helped my hair look shinier and softer. I usually wash my hair twice a week. I suppose diet plays a role too. 👍

I used to use that stuff, too.
As far as dandruff goes, it actually did clear it up for me, but after a while, my hair started having other issues. My hair is thin and straight, and this stuff would make it look like a bowl of ramen noodles within just a few hours 😲 of washing. So, I had to stop using it...

Honestly, I’m so jealous of anyone who doesn't feel the need to wash their hair every single day
I mean, I’ve been stuck in this routine for years now—just washing it every single morning before heading into work 😢

Washing your hair twice a day is just overkill. Honestly, what is wrong with people? I mean, even if there’s heavy smog out in Los Angeles, your hair isn't going to get that greasy in just a few hours. Personally, I can't stand it when my hair gets even slightly oily, but I guess going to such extremes just isn't smart.

I feel like I’ve tried pretty much everything under the sun when it comes to hair care..

Ideally, you'd only wash your hair once a week—those natural oils from your scalp are basically a built-in shield against dryness. But let's be real, for 95% of people out there, that's just not happening. So, you need other ways to manage it.

For instance, Keune ultra mild shampoo is a lifesaver if you're washing constantly. It’s honestly genius—smells like oranges, super gentle, even kids could use it.
And if you're a daily washer, you've gotta go heavy on the nourishment: masks, deep conditioners, all that good stuff...
Also, wax is a game changer. Like those orange-scented Shaping Fibers from Keune.. honestly, I'm obsessed with Keune; it's easily the best brand I've ever touched. What’s your take on Keune?

I’m a fan of Keune—that orange wax is honestly top-tier—along with a lot of their other products, but I wouldn't say this particular shampoo feels particularly gentle.
I tend to stick to more neutral brands that don't load up on harsh chemicals, something like Aveeno or SheaMoisture.

I mean, I wash my hair at least five times a week, and honestly, I just stick with that L'Oréal Elseve shampoo and I haven't had any issues with my hair at all, I guess.

Look, kids can use Keuneov shampoo just fine—it’s super mild. The thing is, Keueov stuff is insanely concentrated. You basically need to use half the amount you'd use with any other brand.

So, maybe it was just a quantity issue!

I used to struggle with super oily hair, but I think things are finally looking up. I used to wash my hair every other day, but one summer I decided to just chill out and wash it less frequently to see what would happen. It actually worked—now it stays clean for about 3 or 4 days, so I can get away with washing it just twice a week. Also, since I dealt with some dandruff issues for a while, my dermatologist advised me to make sure I dry my hair thoroughly after every wash to help keep it under control.

Look, you really gotta stop washing your hair every single day!!! Seriously, try to stick to a max of three times a week. If you overdo it, your hair gets super dry, and your scalp starts acting up—like, those oil glands go into overdrive because they think they need to compensate, which just makes everything itchy. It ends up totally wrecking your hair quality too, leaving you with those annoying split ends or even making it fall out more than usual...

You really shouldn't be washing your hair more than once a week,
honestly, twice a month is even better!!!

I just wash my hair twice a week. Honestly, massive respect to the girls with long hair who actually bother washing it every single day! I feel like I’d lose my mind if I had to deal with that...

I spent some time washing my hair every single day just to see what would happen... even with high-end products, it started thinning out and getting greasy way too fast, so that was a total bust. Now I stick to twice a week max. Honestly, for most people, that's plenty.
Personally, I don't think daily washing is healthy at all. Like someone mentioned, you end up messing with your oil glands and your hair just ends up bone dry.
But hey, everyone can do whatever they want.

I typically wash my hair every three days, though occasionally I find myself needing back-to-back washes over the weekend. If I spend an evening at any sort of smoky venue—you know, those dimly lit bars or clubs—my hair ends up smelling like an absolute ashtray, which is just revolting. 😠

On the other hand, I haven't touched a blow dryer in years; using one used to leave my hair looking less like a style and more like a frayed broomstick. Since I have long, wavy hair, I’ve been fortunate enough that letting it air-dry actually results in a decent "look." 😉 I also make a point to steer clear of gels, sprays, or heavy mousses, as they tend to weigh my hair down until it feels lifeless.

Checking your hair every single day? People are way too intense.
Twice a week is plenty for me.
