Trust me, you aren't alone in feeling that way.
Ever since I watched the FF : TSW animation in those cartoons, I’ve been looking at everything strictly from a technical standpoint—like, how skillfully they actually use the animation rather than just whether it looks "good." (Mostly because I haven't seen anything better yet).
And honestly, I probably won't stop doing that until I see something that actually surpasses it.
It’s just such a shame because this movie doesn't have anything else going for it besides the visuals. As a huge FF fan, that kind of stings even more.

FF is basically all flash and no substance, kind of like Vidocq—it’s just a showcase for special effects and camera tricks. There's zero depth here; the plot feels like it was scribbled down by a middle schooler. Honestly, that’s why it’ll be forgotten by next week.
Compared to FF, Ice Age actually holds some weight (even if it isn't a masterpiece either).
Plus, Ice Age goes with talking animals. FF tries to use animation to fake reality—trying to mimic how people and environments look in real life, even though it's set in the future. It's not a fair fight. Even though FF is technically more complex and nearly flawless from a production standpoint, Ice Age works way better because its animation is simpler. My only gripe with Ice Age is the humans. Animating people is always a struggle; even in FF, where they tried their best, the characters still look a bit too artificial and plastic.

FF ended on a rather pathetic note, and frankly, it’s all because they tried too hard to make something "profound." That was their fatal mistake. As for the plot and the movie as a whole, it could have been absolutely anything.
The blunder lies in taking a mediocre, uninspired sci-fi concept and wrapping it in 3D animation, essentially using the technology just to show off visuals that wouldn't have looked out of place in a standard feature.
Had they actually integrated the unique strengths of 3D animation into the core essence of the film, rather than treating it like mere packaging, they might have actually pulled it off.
My point is, nothing about this film is so egregious that I would dismiss it as complete garbage. It certainly isn't that. At the very least, it's a decent attempt...
Vidocq remains one of my favorite films from last year, not because of the hollow plot—which isn't particularly vital anyway (especially when dealing with Pitof)—but precisely because the entire production is built upon those stunning visual effects. If we are going to treat a film as a showcase for a visual seminar, why bother trying to camouflage it with a simulated narrative and characters? Uhh, is there even any point in comparing the animation in FF : TSW?
I didn't even really watch it as a cartoon—not that I wasn't interested in the animation, but more like a movie. To me, cartoons are all about those caricatured characters (well, not always). And as a movie, it’s pretty pathetic, but man, the animation is stunning. That old scientist guy was the best part; they actually showed his wrinkles and facial imperfections, whereas everyone else just looked way too "smooth" to me.
And regarding how people look in Ice Age, do you guys seriously think they couldn't have done a better job with the humans? Of course they could've. My take is that the humans were animated that way on purpose, for the same reason the people don't talk. It's to show we're looking at an animal world and to downplay how important humans are. lonemarlin40, of course the characters are intentionally stylized, which is something I value quite highly. Animated people rendered with photorealistic detail feel utterly pointless, unless your goal is simply to digitally resurrect someone who isn't even acting anymore...

Let me get one thing straight regarding FF : TSW. The main reason it flopped at the box office is because they slapped the FF name on it.
Anyone who’s actually played even one of the sequels knows there's easily about 50 hours of story there, yet they squeezed the whole movie into a measly 80 minutes. Seriously? They rushed absolutely everything. You barely have enough time to wrap your head around the plot before the credits start rolling. And don't even get me started on that ending—it was a total letdown. Specifically, those last words from Dr. Cid, "It's warm"... what was that supposed to mean? WTF? I guess I expected something a bit more intelligent from a character like him.
Honestly, the whole thing felt less like a cinematic experience and more like someone just stitched together a bunch of cutscenes from another FF sequel and called it a day.

Forget reality; if I’m going to watch Cirtić, then I’m going to watch Cirtić. It’s damn frustrating when you try to escape into a movie only to realize you've ended up watching something that basically looks just like real life anyway.

It’s definitely not Shrek. Honestly, I doubt he’ll ever measure up to Shrek, who is basically my favorite cartoon 🙏 🙏 🙏

...this movie is absolute perfection (right up there with Shrek and Monsters Inc.); it's easily the best animation out there. Plus, the DVD extras are killer—you get deleted scenes and even a little clip about a squirrel or whatever else is in there.🙏 🙏

By the way, total off-topic tangent here, but I've always felt bummed that they never made a full cartoon series for Roger Rabbit and Baby Herman. As far as I can remember, there was only that one single episode set in the hospital. 😢

I’d say it beats Monsters Inc., though it doesn't quite reach the level of Shrek. That squirrel-thingy, however, is absolutely fantastic!
