dustypilot11 said:Look, look at it this way. Reddit is private property, so the owner can do whatever they want.
It's like owning an apartment and someone walks in thinking they can do whatever and say whatever because they have a "democratic right" to do it. If you own the place and they're getting on your nerves, you've got the right to kick them out—that trumps their "right" to speak there. Like, yeah, they still have free speech, they just gotta go say it somewhere else.

Private property rights and how we treat people we share space with are all governed by American law. We can't just trash someone else's stuff or act however we want without trampling on their rights.

By signing up, we basically agreed to follow a set of rules that actually fall short of what the law requires.
If a regular user is out here following all the rules, then the mods and everyone running the show should be setting the standard for how to actually respect them.

It’s like if you owned an apartment and someone just barged in, acting like they own the place and saying whatever they want because "freedom of speech" gives them a pass. If you're the homeowner and they're driving you crazy, you have every right to kick them out. They still have their right to speak—they just have to do it somewhere else.

That comparison doesn't really hold up. The lease agreement is what governs the relationship between landlords and tenants. If rights are violated, that's a matter for the courts to decide. Forcing someone out isn't legal, and if anyone tries to go that route anyway, they better be ready to face the consequences if it goes against the signed contract.

Look, if you decide to smash your own phone into a wall without hurting anyone, that's your business. If the owner of this forum wants to ruin it with trash moderation or just shut it down tomorrow, that's also their right.
That’s a bad comparison. Landlord-tenant relationships are handled by a contract. If one side breaks the rules, you go to court. You can't just kick someone out forcefully; if an owner tries that, they better be ready for the legal fallout if it goes against the signed lease.

I'm talking about a guest who isn't paying a dime, not a tenant.

Every once in a while, you need to check the topic title and ask yourself if that "must-reply" response to the last guy actually fits the subject.

A little self-censorship on off-topic threads is actually a good thing.

Whatever, man. Like 2/3 of the posts here are totally off-topic, including all that whining about how other forums handle moderation and whatever. Lucky for us, the PDF got some backup so we can just move everything to the right threads.

Maria Barnes said:Can you expand on that comparison between how things are moderated here versus elsewhere?

First example—this one covers US politics on an international forum. At the top of the thread, there's a warning:
Things are getting a bit intense here. Let's try to keep things respectful toward one another.

Also, please take a second to read over the general netiquette guidelines for this forum. Even though we're just diving into American politics, that rule stays pinned right at the top for a reason.
Keep in mind we have people joining us from all over the world. They might see our everyday topics through a different lens, and those perspectives are just as valuable.

Moderation here is pretty light, even when things get heated. Not many posts get nuked, and despite having millions of members, I can't recall many people being kicked off a thread. People argue, sure, but they stay on topic. It’s not like those other forums where everyone just starts hurling insults at each other. Honestly, if you just stick to the subject, there’s rarely an issue. If you want to vent about something else, just send a DM—it's not against the rules, it just keeps the peace. For instance, back when Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović was looking longingly at Donald Trump, people kept asking me for my take on her politics, or about Melania's ability to speak five languages and her architecture degree. Even though I'm writing from Italy, people still recognize my roots.
The big difference compared to other forums is that moderators don't jump into the debate. How can you claim to be objective if you're constantly bickering with members? You can't expect anyone to take you seriously when it’s obvious whose side you're taking.

Using warning cards as a way to discipline people is insulting—just look at how many complaints there are about them. If someone breaks the rules, they should be banned and removed from the forum. We aren't kids; you don't give us a "timeout." In my experience, getting a warning from just one specific moderator on this site felt like a massive insult, whereas I usually just roll my eyes at the others. Over 15 years ago, I jumped onto the old Women's Day Forum and posted something that could have been seen as flamebaiting, maybe even bordering on offensive, though I didn't mean it that way. Instead of getting handed a warning card, it actually sparked a really intelligent discussion where people tried to walk me through their perspective. Out of all the replies, only one was the typical "who do you think you are, coming to an all-American board and being disrespectful" type. I ended up staying on that forum for a long time, and people often compared it to Reddit. There was even a user who had "thankful for George W. Bush" in her signature, yet she would debate a self-identified left liberal without a single person resorting to insults. When I shared that story on a different American message board not too long ago, I annoyed people so much I got hit with a serious wave of verbal diarrhea. Even though I approached Americans with a post that might not have read as particularly friendly, they just labeled me a snobbish, stuck-up elitist.
At my age and with the experience I’ve gained, I usually just ignore the noise rather than bothering the mods to fight my battles. Not everyone feels that way, though. It’s a shame how many people expect moderators to act like referees—and even worse, some mods actually seem to think they should be playing judge and jury on this forum.

On the diaspora forum, the mods have effectively killed any chance of people actually connecting. I haven’t visited in ages; I think the Canadians are still running their own thread, occasionally interrupted by people who treat the board like a government help desk.
Over on the food forum, a mod basically sabotaged himself early on by accidentally making a private staff post public. Then there was that cooking competition I started—it was supposed to be about hanging out and sharing recipes, but thanks to some mindless moderation, it turned into a total battlefield. All that was missing were people fighting over civil war politics. Not long ago, on a board that could actually be a nice community, a moderator decided to sharpen his knives again—not to prep a meal, but just to start a flame war...
I’ve been on message boards for twenty years. I once had to use a fake ID number just to join a Chinese forum. I’ve made friends all over the globe, but I’ve never encountered moderators this verbally aggressive until I came here.
Look, I don't mind the rule against critiquing moderation, but you can't have a mod who types away happily whenever they feel like it, then suddenly decides to play "policeman" with colorful highlights the second anyone calls them out for bias. That's where the conversation ends.

If there are rules for users, why aren't there rules for the mods? Why is it acceptable to have a moderator who's insulting, someone who spams their own thread (if they're just flipping the same pancake every single day, that's spam), or someone who deletes posts without telling the user why? It’s bad enough when they moderate with obvious bias or hand out penalties to newbies for something minor, like uploading an image that's too large. And let's be clear: one specific mod here isn't just part of a clique, he actively encourages people to gang up on newcomers or anyone with a different opinion. To be blunt, I have nothing but contempt for one particular mod here; he acted like a complete zero during someone else's personal tragedy, and that's being generous. Everyone else would probably do a much better job if there were a unified set of rules for moderators to follow. I don't know why this restrictive style of policing has become the norm here, but it's pathetic that the mods themselves often act like the worst kind of bullies.
I haven't picked up penalty points anywhere else, and I haven't been insulted by mods anywhere else. On foreign forums, I even dive into political debates that I steer clear of here just to avoid the drama.
I only came back because of nostalgia. I used to be way more active, and I still see this place as a way to check in on home every now and then, but I'm becoming more of a lurker. Every time I go to type something instead of just hitting "reply," I find myself closing the tab thinking, "Yeah, I don't need this headache." It looks like self-censorship has finally hit me, too.🕺

Jason Brown5 said:I won't speak on my own behalf, but I will mention one thing: what you fail to grasp is that every single moderator—every single one except me, which is fine by me—is infinitely more valuable to this site and to Maria Barnes than you could ever hope to be.
Not just compared to the users who produce quality content, mind you.

But compared to you—someone who probably runs an ad-blocker and therefore contributes nothing via clicks, while the content you generate consists of pathetic attempts to hit on every female profile in completely irrelevant threads—you provide no utility whatsoever.

And let's be clear: moderator decisions are not infallible. However, they aren't "wrong" simply because some user said so. You didn't understand a single thing in your first post, nor did you actually comment on anything related to that post. It doesn't matter how many times some whining victim complains; the only thing that matters is whether they have a legitimate grievance.

And that isn't your call to make.

Alright, check this out. This post is basically the poster child for desperate communication. It’s a textbook example of a moderator acting like they're "above the average user," and it highlights a massive, glaring issue on this site: there is absolutely zero oversight for the moderators themselves.

This moderator is everything a good mod shouldn't be, period. Consider this a giant red flag—it's high time we either change the rules or actually create some real criteria for how people get picked for these roles in the first place.

So, when faced with actual criticism regarding their work, this mod goes with "I won't talk about myself" and immediately pivots into a nasty ad hominem attack against a user.

Where does that lead? Does that lead to any kind of constructive debate?
How is someone who responds like this supposed to be the person responsible for managing heated discussions?

Basically, we can boil this moderator's response down to three things:

1. Don't question the mod's authority unless you want to get smacked—if necessary, they'll dig through all your profiles just to find something to insult you with, all while hiding behind a burner account.
2. Moderators are chosen by God himself, and if anyone is going to judge them, it’s only the person who hired them. Nobody else gets a say.
3. If you use an ad-blocker and aren't clicking on ads, you are essentially invisible and worthless to this site.

That last part is a particularly lovely little confession coming straight from the administration.

You know what they say—give people a little power and they’ll show you who they really are.

There are way too many moderators on this Reddit

And even though I asked them for the specific rule I supposedly broke while I was banned, I still haven't heard a single word back.

So much for "quality moderation."

I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone get banned or even flagged on TMZ... I mean, I'm not sure if they even have those rules in place. You’d probably have to seriously screw up, like repeatedly doxxing someone, just to get hit with a permanent ban. Usually, the mods just drop by every once in a while with a warning and leave it at that. There are way too many lurkers watching anyway...

Mods really ought to stop disabling DMs, because there are times when you can't even ask why you got a ban or a warning since the messages just don't go through, plus all those threads about the local high school football rankings keep vanishing...

Can someone please give me an actual definition of what trolling even is? I’m starting to feel like every second person on here is just a troll, and honestly, the mods seem to have zero clue how to actually define it.

Or just drop some half-baked troll post on a random subreddit without being too extra, and you'll quickly find out if it's even worth your time to stay.

That was a great post by stormylynx4. 👍

I kind of wanted to jump in here and say—it feels like the mods are acting more like schoolteachers lately... using those bans and warnings just to hand out punishments and negative vibes instead of actually helping us out.

Maybe it’d be a smart move to just scrap the whole warning system for a bit—you know, just to see if things actually get better or if the atmosphere improves without all that extra pressure...

The one thing you still need to grasp is that you aren't the one calling the shots here. On most major platforms—unlike that toxic mess over at Reddit—you wouldn't even be permitted to say something like that in the first place. It’s essentially a non-starter.
The moderators have their own supervisors to answer to. If they’re incompetent, they get replaced. And just as importantly, we don't allow every single idiot to spit on them (God forbid I'm referring to you).

This post is a perfect example of someone who shouldn't be a moderator—not even a low-level sheep, let alone the lead mod of a major American forum.
Bad moderators don't get fired; instead, they linger for years by sucking up to the owner, hiding behind a "tough guy" persona while pretending to actually moderate. In reality? They're just little tyrants who get a cheap thrill out of deleting posts or banning users.

Real moderators are respected; they don't clutter the threads, and most importantly, they don't go around threatening the users.
They actually attract people to the community.

The fact that you're still around is a failure of the entire system—something everyone has been debating for days now.

What Jason Brown5 is saying is absolute garbage. If this is how he acts in public, imagine what kind of trash he’s talking about users in the private sections of Reddit

No connections. From what I've gathered, things aren't nearly as bad as he's making them out to be.🤷

The honest truth. ☕

Well, it’s perfectly obvious that this is just an example—nothing more, nothing less. People. Who shouldn't be a moderator? Honestly, that's a question worth debating—though I suspect most people would just point fingers blindly.

Just wondering what's going on. That person. He behaves exactly like most of the other users on this Reddit thread—though, I suppose, credit and glory go to the few exceptions.

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions. ☕

It’s just as critical to note that this individual actually started off by posting something perfectly reasonable—only to have Kmečko McKmečkić launch into a completely hysterical, unhinged attack against them. 😍

Yes. This individual. She didn't even bother to answer—she just chose silence—and honestly, Kmečko got exactly what was coming to him with that massive penalty; if he hadn't, there would have been an absolute uproar.

But then—if the moderator decides to fight fire with fire and hits back just as hard—suddenly everyone starts wailing again.

Honestly, you all need to get on the same page regarding what kind of community you actually want this Reddit to be. ☕ So, here we are—on a Reddit thread where you can basically go to war with the moderators without any hope of a comeback. It’s legitimate, I suppose. But honestly? Expecting anyone to actually pull that off is a stretch. It’s tough to make it stick.

Given how people are getting slapped with those 25-point penalties for trolling, maybe they should just change the wording to "being an absolute nuisance."

Why on earth would you suggest that? Care to elaborate?
Or better yet—do you actually have the guts to back that up?🥳
