To be completely honest, I actually liked both versions... I gave them the exact same rating.
The sequels from Sweden were honestly pretty mediocre, so I’m really hoping the Americans can turn things around.

It’s pretty much a rule that David Fincher doesn't touch remakes—this is actually his first foray into that territory, though he did go ahead and binge-watch Alien 1 & 2 right before jumping into this third installment... so there isn't really anything "classic" about his approach here. The only thing you can truly call typical is that unmistakable visual style of his. As far as the actual movie goes, it just doesn't capture that raw energy the originals had. Plus, they definitely toned things down to appease the US censors—you know, cutting out the rapes, the decapitations, all that gritty stuff—so it feels watered down. Either he put an insane amount of trust in the screenwriters (who probably had to walk him through every single beat of the original movies since he hadn't seen them), or he saw exactly what would trigger the American audience and decided to play it safe...

I watched the original all by myself at home, but I caught the remake in the theater. Man, that first one absolutely blew me away during a late-night marathon! This second one? It felt way too rushed for my taste. You're totally right about the violence, though—it’s definitely dialed back. I bet the producers trimmed it down because the first cut was probably over three hours long.

There are tons of book details that got changed in the Swedish versions too, and the books were shortened (especially the second and third movies, which felt pretty shallow).
For example, did you know Mikael Blomquist has a daughter? Her role was huge in helping him figure out what those numbers next to the names meant—it wasn't just Lisbeth randomly guessing it was a quote from The Bible. Honestly, I think Fincher just tweaked the ending a bit and kept everything else straight from the books.

It’s not even a question—all three books are sitting right on my desk.
Guess we weren't reading the same books then.
In the novels, Lisbeth is described as someone who almost certainly has Asperger's, which Rooney Mara played way better than Noomi Rapace (not that Noomi is to blame, really; it feels more like the director wanted a more Lisbeth-aggressive version instead of the slightly autistic-vulnerable vibe she has in the books and how Rooney nailed it).
Plus, physically, Lisbeth is supposed to look like a pale, skinny fifteen-year-old boy, whereas Noomi looks much stronger, darker, and obviously older.
