Timeouts in soccer?

Doing three thirty-minute segments with ten-minute breaks in between feels like the right way to go.

If we just tinkered with the rulebook every single year based on whatever whim some official had, the whole game would
completely lose its connection to where it came from. Most of the fundamental rules have basically stayed the same since 1922—that was the last time we saw any truly massive shifts.

That old-school conservatism has actually done wonders for soccer, which is pretty much the biggest sport on the planet at this point. Part of the reason it's so huge is because people know exactly what to expect when they sit down to watch. That consistency is key.

In fact, it's probably a good thing that the British still hold four of those eight permanent seats on the IFAB board.
