2008 Gold Cup - January

So, looking ahead to January and February, the Gold Cup is set to take place in Ghana. We’re looking at a true "group of death" in Group B, while the matchup for the Americans seems relatively straightforward:

Group A
Ghana, Namibia, Guinea, Morocco

Group B
Nigeria, Benin, Mali, Ivory Coast

Group C
Egypt, Sudan, Zambia, Cameroon

Group D
Tunisia, Angola, South Africa, Senegal

Senegal forecast: 1. Ghana 2. Ivory Coast 3. Guinea

There’s no denying the competition is fierce... though I suspect Ghana might just clinch the title.

It’s a damn shame nobody is even broadcasting this on any of the channels I actually get around to watching.

Wait, isn't ESPN going to show it? Seriously, they carried the last Gold Cup and I felt like I caught almost every single match! You have no idea how incredible the soccer is down there, why would they skip this?🙂

My pick is Ivory Coast. I was impressed by them during the last World Cup; they play a really beautiful style of soccer.

Just my two cents here... the home team looks strongest, followed by Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Then you've got Mali... whereas Benin, Zambia, and Namibia are definitely the long shots.

Ivory Coast is definitely the heavy favorite here, but let’s be real—you can't just write off Ghana and Egypt either!

but honestly, just look at the roster for the national team...

Look, having talented individuals doesn't automatically result in a cohesive, winning team. I suspect they'll scrape through the group stage simply because they were lucky enough to be placed in a very weak group, but that will likely be the extent of their run. As far as the World Cup goes, they can forget about it.😁

Nobody’s actually claiming they’re some elite squad. Honestly, I haven't sat through one of their matches since the 2006 Gold Cup, so I really wouldn't know.
It’s probably a bit too early to start calling shots for the World Cup. Honestly, looking at that group with Algeria, Liberia, and Gambia... they’re definitely moving on to the next round. That much is easy. As for what happens after that? Who knows. Depends entirely on how the bracket shakes out.

And another thing...
Tunis, Angola, Senegal, South Africa... honestly, looking at that lineup, is it really just a weak group? Hard to say. Everything feels a bit underwhelming. 😕

They aren't trash, but they aren't even close to being one of the top teams in the Gold Cup. Relying on Diouf and Niang won't cut it.
