Jaap Stam announces retirement

I assume most of you are aware that Jaap Stam officially hung up his cleats yesterday. As he put it himself, he simply couldn't maintain that 100% physical intensity anymore, and once that drive starts to fade, the motivation follows suit. He decided to call it quits a bit earlier than anyone expected, choosing to walk away while he still could. What are your thoughts on this absolute defensive powerhouse? 🙏

He was unstoppable, except for when he ran into Mario Mandžukić😁 ... and Tadić😂

If you ask me, he shouldn't have even been on the roster to start this season.🙂

I honestly think he’d look pretty sharp sporting a monocle.

He was an incredible player back in his prime, but those days are long gone.

But here's the thing... most guys his age—let alone guys his size—can only dream of making those kinds of lung-busting runs with the ball in the 100th minute of a match... just like those sprints he pulled against the LA Lakers...

A brilliant move. Honestly, so many players are far too quick to sell out their hard-earned reputation just to chase a few extra bucks... but not this guy. He was an absolute rock on defense, played the game the right way, and retired with his integrity intact. Total respect.🙏

That’s true. But that’s what being a professional is all about. It's not like being, say, the brother of some executive VP.

I couldn't wait for it to be over. It was even better that they lost. Now I can finally go enjoy myself; otherwise, I would have been stuck waiting until spring.

I worry about Jaap Stam, since Canada has nothing left to offer.🙂

He used to be my absolute hero, especially since I play center back myself, though these days I find myself looking up to guys like John Terry and Sol Campbell. It really is such a shame to see yet another legend walking away from the game, isn't it? Honestly, that particular era of players was just my favorite generation out of everyone, you know? Just think about that lineup: Zidane, Paolo Maldini, Jaap Stam, Roberto Carlos, Rui Costa, Juan Sebastián Verón, Rivaldo, Pavel Nedvěd, Lilian Thuram, Ryan Giggs, Luís Figo, Dwight Yorke, Dwight Yorke, Coca-Cola, Cafu, and Ronaldo... but hey, what can you do? One by one, they're all slowly moving on...

This hits hard. Honestly, one of the saddest moments I've dealt with lately. The only thing that moved me quite this much was the tragic passing of the legendary Colin McRae.
He realized he couldn't give this club his absolute best anymore, so he decided to hang it up for good. You have to respect that kind of integrity.

Kudos to the move and huge props on an incredible career. For a while there, he was actually the most expensive defender on the planet—back when a massive transfer fee was still considered a legitimate indicator of pure quality.

Man, I swear it feels like just yesterday when he first joined Manchester United. I remember Blažičko claiming—and knowing him, he probably repeated it 🙄 about a million times—that Jaap Stam was the most expensive cornerstone in football history 😁 😁 😁

I used to feel pretty much the same way about him, too. Well, I hope retirement treats him well 🙂

Yeah, it was basically the same story for three or four months while Jaap Stam was still finding his rhythm and struggling to gel with the squad.

Once he finally settled in with the rest of the guys, he played so incredibly well that he actually forced Blažičko to apologize.
I honestly think that, alongside winning the Champions League, stands as one of the absolute peaks of his entire career.

I found him absolutely fascinating back at Lazio when they moved him over to right back; he played that role so brilliantly, showing everyone he had both the technical skill and the high football IQ to match.

I’m not gonna lie, I was genuinely floored when I first caught a glimpse of him out there in the freezing cold at Laziu; I honestly thought it was going to be a total joke, thinking he wasn't even remotely agile or quick enough to pull this off.

But then you see him out there absolutely tearing it up, handling the ball like it's nothing, just sprinting down that sideline with such speed it'll make your head spin if you try to keep up...
