I’m not much for the long-winded rambling I see from some of my colleagues, so, true to form, I’ll keep this brief.

A truly stellar film. 👍

Whether you’re looking for folklore or a deep thematic core, it delivers on every front. It’s excellent.

The setting is an African village or small town, but honestly, you could transplant this entire plot to any corner of the globe. You’d only need to find a place struggling with poverty to make it work.

Probably the first movie from West Africa I've actually sat down to watch 😁

I wouldn't say I was blown away, but it was definitely interesting! Beyond the main plot about romance and a personal vendetta, there’s this really sharp critique of colonialism and consumerism in developing nations...

I have to admit, it caught me a bit off guard, but honestly? It’s great to see these kinds of themes being explored on screen now 👍

I'm feeling the exact same way about it. It’s basically just a deep dive into human greed and whether people will eventually devolve into pure animals—basically Hyenas—if you provide enough incentive...
Regarding the characters, I was a bit lost on that whole situation with the former judge who’s now working for Linguère Ramatou. I ended up binge-watching it three times right before bed, so some of the finer points got a little fuzzy, but there was that one scene where he was explaining how he presided over a case back when Linguère was still young. That part just doesn't track for me, considering he's actually twenty years younger than her. 🤔

Oh, it definitely has humor, but it's satire—that specific brand of comedy where you aren't exactly supposed to be laughing out loud...

Fair enough. My mistake, though. I was operating under the standard definition of comedy—you know, the kind where you actually laugh. 🙂

Regarding the judge... you've got a point there. I just rewatched that scene where he’s addressing the crowd, and honestly, it makes zero sense. They really should have cast a much more seasoned actor for that role.

Mostly I'm with you guys on the vibes—it’s solid satire with a massive scope. There are some killer lines in there, mostly coming out of the mouth of that one "total bitch" character. 😁 That church scene was incredibly atmospheric. 👍

So, how exactly did Ms. Linguère Ramatou manage to scrape together her fortune? Did she perhaps stumble upon a mountain of gold in the wreckage after that plane crash?

Or was it more likely that, after years of selling herself, she finally settled down with some wealthy benefactor she had been pulling the strings on?

It’s honestly pretty funny watching how quickly the mayor suddenly turned into a massive feminist the second there was a financial incentive involved. Seems like a pattern we see all too often these days, doesn't it? 😁

But man, that badass woman who survived the plane crash totally stole the show. It's a real shame she didn't get even more screen time, though. 🙏
