Classic.

And that's basically how the whole anti-vax movement gets its start—misreading one thing, spreading it like wildfire, and boom... we're there.

The whole deal with Omicron (and Beta) popping up in South Africa isn't because they're the birthplace of these variants; it’s just because they have top-tier infectious disease departments thanks to years of dealing with AIDS. It’s honestly pretty shortsighted to try and ban flights from South Africa when Omicron is already everywhere else—South Africa is basically just acting as the messenger here.

As long as the pro-vax crowd keeps peddling the same tired "facts" for two years straight. I mean, let's not forget the legendary "two weeks to flatten the curve" nonsense we were all fed, right?

Does anyone know if the third case in the US was vaccinated or not?

Unknown is tearing through South Africa, but experts are stumped: almost nobody is actually showing COVID symptoms

President Cyril Ramaphosa said Monday that the unknown variant of SARS-CoV-2 is spreading through South Africa faster than anything we've seen, though there are signs it's causing much milder cases than previous strains, according to The New York Times.

Scientists at a major medical center in Pretoria noted that their current COVID patients aren't showing nearly as many symptoms as the ones they were treating before, and they're seeing the same thing in hospitals across the country. In fact, most people testing positive are being admitted for other issues entirely and aren't even feeling sick from the virus itself.

Rule the unknown. 🤦

"If the source is confirmed to be the unknown variant, or if there’s any epidemiological suspicion that we're dealing with the unknown variant, everyone who had contact is looking at a 14-day quarantine. This applies regardless of whether you've been vaccinated or already had it. You'll also need to take a PCR test at the start and again on the final day," says the revised CDC guidelines.

"If sequencing proves it isn't the unknown variant, the 14-day quarantine is scrapped, and contacts are handled according to standard protocols for domestic strains."

Honestly, this just gives me even more reason to skip the shots altogether.

Hey there, jabbers. You ready for another round of lockdowns??🎉

All those shots were a waste of time anyway—they don't even touch the unknown strain, and meanwhile, you've gone and trashed your own natural immunity!
Can it get any more pathetic?
🙂

LOCKDOWN COMES AGAIN!🙂🙂

This brings up a whole series of questions—questions for which, naturally, the task force nor anyone else seems to possess an answer.
The most pressing issue is how they supposedly know if someone is carrying the unknown variant or not.
A PCR test simply doesn't show that. It merely hunts for two or three characteristic markers that could be anything at all—truly. Because of this, PCR shouldn't even be used as a diagnostic tool, as it proves absolutely nothing... nothing at all.
So, what happens now with the unknown?
Without taking a sample and performing actual laboratory sequencing, there is no way to determine if someone has Alpha, delta—which is also unknown—or the unknown. PCR is irrelevant here.

I fear we are witnessing a new level of collective cognitive dissonance.
Now, it seems everyone who is vaccinated or tests positive via PCR will be labeled with the unknown variant... because the government knows exactly who is vaccinated and can simply pin this new variant on them.
It is, quite obviously, nothing more than a smoke screen designed to mask the fact that the vaccine isn't worth a damn—and that those who were vaccinated might actually find it easier to get infected, given that the vaccine itself may be what triggers all these cases of the unknown.

Right now, the trend suggests that unknown is significantly less threatening than delta or alpha... If this holds true over the next few weeks, we should probably just open everything back up and let it spread until it becomes dominant as quickly as possible. At this point, the restrictions are barely doing anything to slow down the momentum anyway.

Let's hope so!

Though, it's summer in South Africa, but here in the States, even the unknown strain this summer felt kind of "milder"...
https://www.telegram.com/politics-crisis-two-weeks/
“Based on what we’ve seen over the last two weeks, there’s a chance this unknown strain currently circulating isn't quite as pathogenic—meaning it might not wreck lungs or cause such devastating pneumonia like the previous ones did,” said Dr. unknown. However, he noted that his theory still needs to be backed up by more research.

Well, yeah, we've already proven that theory wrong with actual data.
And do we even need to bring up all those claims that the virus—basically just like the flu—would just vanish by late spring 2020?
They screwed us over every single time.

So, I guess I'm just trying to stay positive and hope things finally start working in our favor. Maybe after two years, the virus will just get tired of messing with us too.

We'll just keep an eye on what's happening in Europe. The next two weeks will be...

Hmm....
I haven't quite followed the logic here, nor have I read much beyond a few posts.

So, by that reasoning, omicron is supposedly the final mutation, making it ideal to let loose immediately?

It doesn't necessarily have to be the last one. Alpha was more lethal than Delta, even though Delta was more contagious. If omicron turns out to be even less deadly while being more infectious, you could argue the pandemic is essentially winding down. It’ll eventually just settle into something on par with the seasonal flu and that’ll be that.

So yeah, the logic holds up: if it turns out omicron is less dangerous but more widespread—which is what the preliminary data is already suggesting—it’s probably better to let it outpace delta. Like I’ve said before, all these restrictions only serve to slow the spread, they don't actually stop it.

If this Omicron variant is supposedly so harmless—and it clearly is, given that most people aren't even showing symptoms—then how are we even detecting it? Who actually goes to see a doctor when they feel fine, unless they're just being hypochondriacs? If that's the case, why is there such a push in the Western EU to mandate N95 masks just to stop the spread of Omicron?

Look, it’s simple: you either catch it and feel absolutely nothing, or you end up with a mild head cold. So, what exactly are we fighting? Why all this drama over a "terrifying" virus that barely leaves a mark?

People weren't going to the doctor because they felt healthy; they were there for other issues. As for how much of a problem it'll actually be here in the States, it's still too early to tell.

Are we really such a different breed from the folks over in Jordan and the surrounding areas? Are we supposed to believe that something will be considered malicious here, while they get a free pass for doing the exact same thing?

Why ask me when even the experts aren't sure? Honestly, I don't see the issue—just hang tight and let things settle down.

Exactly. We aren't any different. Pandemics have a massive seasonal component, and right now they are in the middle of summer over there—even if I can't wrap my head around how that works since the Earth is clearly a flat plane, but whatever...
