How can I find out what's going on with my spouse?

So, my friend’s ex-husband ended up behind bars somewhere—or at least, that’s the working theory—but here’s the kicker: she hasn't heard a single word. Nobody has reached out to tell her why he was taken in or how long he's actually going to be stuck there. Honestly, she isn't even 100% certain he's actually in jail, though given his track record, it’s a pretty safe bet.

Assuming he really is locked up, does anyone know how she can go about finding out the specific charges or the length of his sentence?

She could just call up his company if she knows where he works and ask around, maybe someone there will spill the beans, or even head down to the local police station and identify herself as his ex-wife... I mean, if they have a kid together, they’d probably hand over those details without blinking an eye. Or maybe the person who tipped her off knows more than they're letting on? There's always a way to get what you need, you just have to be smart about it and try knocking on a few different doors...

If he’s definitely in custody, there are two possibilities: he's either serving a sentence after a conviction (jail/prison) or he's being held pending trial (pretrial detention).
For the first case, she should contact the Bureau of Prisons under the Department of Justice. For the second, she needs to reach out to the local criminal court in the jurisdiction where the case is being handled....
