I’m not entirely sure if this is the right sub for this, but does anyone know how things work with isolation orders? My wife just tested positive, and since I was listed as a close contact, I’ve been told to isolate. If I head down to a clinic to get tested myself, am I going to get slapped with a fine just for showing up?

I mean, honestly? You probably shouldn't even bother walking, taking the bus, or grabbing an Uber to the test. Just drive your own car.
And hey, nobody’s gonna judge you for that. No one's going to give you a hard time either.

I mean, how would they even know how he got there? It’s not like they can just go ask some elderly lady pushing a walker. As if.

If he’s sitting in his car while they take the swab, then yeah, he's technically in the car.
If someone's supposed to be in quarantine, they shouldn't be out wandering around—not even to get tested. IMO.

Honestly, this whole thing is just a complete joke. I’m already on my third round of isolation, and frankly, I need some kind of official documentation to make this feel real. Otherwise, I could just sit at home for ten days indefinitely, which feels ridiculous when the testing site is practically right outside my apartment building—literally a three-minute walk.

I know, I know, I probably shouldn't be out and about right now, but I am reaching my absolute breaking point with this nonsense.

So what are you even going to do with a certificate?
You've gotta stay in isolation regardless of what the test says

I would probably look into getting a medical referral for a test. Though, there's a bit of irony there—you'd actually need a positive COVID result, rather than a negative one, just to finally get out from under these isolation rules.

What’s the point of the paperwork? Honestly, where have you been living?😵😵

It’s just one more instance of an innocent person being forced into quarantine through no fault of their own.

The irony is, if you actually test positive, then—and only then—do you finally get a pass from this whole ridiculous isolation cycle.

Look, I get it. I'm stuck in isolation for these next 10 days no matter what. But I'm thinking about the long game here. From what I understand, once you test positive, you're essentially cleared for six months. Literally, if I catch something from someone else in the next half year, I could end up back in quarantine every two weeks at this rate.

I get what you're saying.
But if you're just self-isolating without any actual symptoms... then a negative test doesn't really change anything, right? What's even the point?

It’s honestly a bit of a waste if they aren't actually recognizing antibodies. I mean, what is even the point of running the test for them if that's the case?

Look, there’s nothing to lose here. Nobody is checking your rapid test results to see if you’re actually in quarantine or just sitting on your couch—it’s not like there's some federal inspector at the door. You just have to claim you've got some COVID symptoms. And let's be honest, isn't everything a symptom these days? It's a slippery slope. I drove all the way to the clinic for nothing—got a negative result when I was actually hoping for a positive one. At this point, a positive test feels like hitting the jackpot in the state lottery.
Besides, the crowds are gone. Those ladies in full hazmat suits are probably bored out of their minds anyway.

Fair enough.
I was just thinking that if he's testing positive, it wouldn't be right for him to be out and about.

I mean, you aren't even stepping out of the car—they’re basically walking around in hazmat suits.
We’re running these tests specifically to find the positive cases. If the people who actually suspect they might be sick refuse to show up, then what’s the whole point of testing in the first place?

That’s why I said driving is fine, but walking, taking the bus, or grabbing an Uber? Not happening.

So, I finally managed to get through to the information line. After explaining the whole mess, the lady on the other end assured me that heading straight to the testing site doesn't count as breaking quarantine. Apparently, I'm good to go.

I don't know, it just feels wrong to me that here in NYC, everyone who's supposed to be self-isolating is out wandering around, hopping on the subway or grabbing an Uber... regardless of why they were testing in the first place.
That's a massive amount of people who could potentially be positive.

You can leave your house if you've been summoned for testing.
Confirmed.

Because everyone just happens to have a car?

I don't. When I started showing symptoms and called my doctor, the nurse scheduled me and told me when to head over to the Democratic Party clinic in a Small town in the US, right near Downtown. When I asked how I was supposed to get there without a vehicle, she basically told me to call a cab, wear a mask, and sit in the back behind the driver to get my testing done. Apparently, that's perfectly acceptable since it's coming directly from the person sending you to the test.

In the end, I took a cab to a friend's place Downtown, grabbed his car to drive out to the Small town in the US, then returned his car and walked home. Honestly, wearing a mask in the open air felt like a much smaller threat to passersby than being trapped in a taxi with a driver for nearly an hour.

Rachel Jones8 said:Self-isolation is just for anyone pulling in more than $4,250, those $1417
Now you're pivoting to isolation? That's different—that's sick leave, and the employer picks up the tab.

What’s the amount for people on minimum wage, for example?

I was actually spiraling about this the other day—if this applies to everyone $1417, wouldn't it actually make more sense for some people to just stay home in isolation rather than even bothering to show up to work?😁
