He could have been nominated without breaking a sweat; plenty of much worse performances made the top 5. I haven't sat through every single nominee's film (like Banderas or Pryce), but in my book, he wasn't any weaker than Driver or DiCaprio. Honestly, the winner was the only one who actually outdid Sandler. Last year, he would've cruised right into the top 5.

Let's not get carried away here. 😁 You can't even put DiCaprio and Sandler in the same conversation. If DiCaprio had to churn out twenty solid films before finally walking away with an Oscar, I find it hard to believe Sandler is going to snag a nomination just for his first decent performance.
Besides, both Banderas and DiCaprio delivered truly exceptional performances this year. Truly.

Both guys basically played their usual characters they've been doing for years. Honestly, I thought DiCaprio was actually better here than in the role he won his Oscar for. Banderas was just okay. But Sandler? He was masterful. It’s just that because his past roles were—to put it mildly—garbage, they didn't dare nominate him.🍿

I think *The Meyerowitz Stories*, *Punch-Drunk Love*, and *Reign Over Me* are all truly excellent films.

Sandler needs to put in more work if he wants an Oscar; consider this his wake-up call to stay hungry rather than coasting on these recent roles.
He really needs to prove that this level of performance is his new baseline and something we can consistently expect from him. It feels premature to hand him an Oscar just because he finally delivered a masterclass performance. And I say that as someone who actually enjoys Sandler's work. My fear is that if he picks up the statuette now, he’ll just settle down and retire.

Not quite this good. This was a perfect storm where the movie and his performance just clicked—the film wouldn't even work without him. But honestly, he's done plenty of funny stuff that I don't mind, though I doubt the serious Academy crowd would go for it. 🍿

So, I actually started watching this a few months back, but I just couldn't quite bring myself to finish it... man, oh man.

I think the movie is actually quite good. I’m not usually one for Sandler, but he absolutely crushed it here.

so... what a load of crap 😂 I tried forcing myself to sit through at least half of it, hoping—praying, really—that some actual plot would finally kick in to justify why anyone calls this movie "high quality." But honestly? I should've just killed it after the first 10 minutes when the urge to turn it off hit me. Absolute garbage.

This is one of those rare films I’ve actually slapped a 1/10 on. It’s not even that it’s objectively bad; it’s just the sheer number of repulsive, slimy characters passing through the screen. They all left a bad taste in my mouth, and that includes Sandler, whom I can't stand to begin with. Everyone is just screaming at the top of their lungs—constant bickering, zero normal conversation. Honestly, you could develop a few different psychological disorders just sitting through this. If I hadn't turned it off, I would've been a complete mental wreck by the end. Actually, the only good part was when they shot someone just to make them shut up. If only that had happened at the beginning.

I’ve watched this movie several times now, and honestly, it seems to get better with every single viewing.

The way they crank up the tension is masterful—you really feel the character being torn apart between his addiction, his double life, his family, and the terrible crowd he runs with.

He’s an incorrigible, selfish dreamer, an addict, and a liar...
Yet, somehow, he’s so endearing. It’s easy to connect with him—this underdog dreaming of one big score, convinced he can turn things around, even though deep down he knows that "just one more time" is a lie that never ends.

Maybe calling him that is a bit much, but I think it really drives home the internal chaos the protagonist is struggling with.
The intro feels a little sluggish, almost like a documentary, and I didn't quite get the point of that hyper-realistic depiction of nutrition. I’ve read some reviews where people found it meaningful, but it didn't really do anything for me.

It’s not that I ever had a friend like him—some gambler who always had to hit rock bottom just to feel the rush of a win—it’s more that I recognize those traits in myself (just regarding a different kind of addiction).

And Gigi was absolutely perfect for the ending.

Man, this movie was just as bad as the last one from the Safdie brothers. It’s honestly weird they haven't come up with anything new yet.
