Greetings,

I have a question regarding legalities—is a Wi-Fi subscriber legally allowed to intercept my communications? This is someone I share an internet bill with since we split the monthly cost. The situation is taking place in Germany. Thanks in advance.

You should probably head over to a German forum for this. They'll have a much better handle on how the laws work over there.

I don't know the exact laws, but I'd bet they aren't allowed to, especially in Germany. It’s not like the USA or the UAE or some other totalitarian state. But hey, I'm not a lawyer.

But what exactly do you mean by "snooping"? If you think they're tracking your browsing history, most sites use HTTPS nowadays anyway (everything is encrypted between you and the server). Now, if the owner is using techniques to intercept your traffic by pretending to be a website... yeah, there's a much higher chance that's illegal in Germany. Honestly, I don't think even in the States people are okay with that (unless you're working for the CIA, NSA, or FBI...).

My advice, regardless of whether the Wi-Fi owner is snooping or not: just use a VPN. That way, the only person you actually have to worry about is the VPN provider itself (and, obviously, the NSA, FBI, CIA, or KGB...).
