So, I got into this whole heated debate today with my mail carrier—who was absolutely insisting that, by law, I’m required to have my last name posted right on my apartment door. Is there actually any truth to that? Does anyone know which specific law or regulation would even force me to do something like that?
Down in the lobby at the building entrance, my name is clearly listed on the directory, but I don't have anything posted on my actual unit door....

Pure nonsense.
Since when did you become some legal expert just because you deliver mail?
I’ve had Sgt. Joe Blow’s name on my mailbox for years, and I’m still a free citizen.

He insisted I had to go—mostly because some buddy of his was getting harassed by the cops over the whole thing 😁

It isn't strictly necessary

So, you gotta put it in the mailbox—you know, like in an apartment complex, not really for a single-family house—but you don't necessarily have to stick it on the door... though if you do, just be prepared for them to skip the actual delivery and just toss a little slip of paper into your box instead 🤷

Who gives a damn what the police think? Seriously though, does anyone actually have a nameplate on their door, a mailbox, or even just a name on the box?

The USPS regulations under section 39 are pretty clear about this

I’ve been wondering about this too
because I spent days being harassed by a delivery driver (I think he was from FedEx, not just the regular USPS guy) asking why my last name isn't listed on the doorbell at my building entrance.
We had our phone service switched over recently, and they didn't update everyone's info—they basically only updated the people who were actually home to answer. When someone rang the bell, they'd just ask for a name and then update the system on the spot.
Naturally, the people out working their tails off at 11 in the morning didn't get their names added.
And honestly, I was feeling lazy, so I couldn't be bothered to peel off the plastic covering on the doorbell to write it down, so I just left it for days.

So, this driver ends up calling my landline, demanding to know where I am.
There are twelve apartments in this building; if he’d just looked at the mailboxes, he would have figured it out.
Then he starts lecturing me, acting like it's my duty to have my name clearly posted.
All I could say to him was, "Yeah, yeah, sure..." just to get him off my back.
Then he calls me again a day later to check if I finally wrote it down.
And then, a few days after that, he hits me with the exact same question again.
Finally, I snapped at him.
Like, why do you even care?
I actually went as far as disconnecting my landline from the public directory just so I wouldn't be visible in the listings anymore. I was that fed up.

I honestly think the mail carrier might have gotten a little mixed up regarding the requirement about having your house number clearly marked 😁

That wouldn't even work in practice. You've got apartments where people are squatting or living off welfare for years without anyone knowing, and half the time doors don't even have names stuck on them—just the doorbell. Like, you can bet people aren't actually registered at their homes when their name is just sitting on a mailbox somewhere else.

Give me a break. You really can't tell when someone is being condescending?🤣 Three calls. He was just banking on you keeping up that "yeah, yeah, yeah" act forever.

The mail carrier isn't going to come hunting you down through the apartment complex—they aren't going to ring your bell or go around asking neighbors where you might be hiding. If they miss you, you’ll just find a yellow slip tucked into your mailbox and that’s that... assuming, of course, that your last name is actually clearly marked on the box.
