I decided to start this thread because I honestly can't find any forums, articles, or even basic info on this anywhere. It’s like people act like this type of disorder doesn't even exist. Even some psychiatrists seem totally out of the loop; I feel like people with organic mental disorders get misdiagnosed as having "standard" psychiatric issues just because their EEG comes back normal and they haven't had any major stuff happen afterward, like passing out or anything. I've read that these things are split into neurological versus psychiatric categories, as if they don't overlap at all, but to me, organic disorders feel like a total mix of both. For anyone who isn't familiar, organic mental disorders are basically mental health issues caused by brain damage—Wikipedia gives a quick breakdown of that. To those of you dealing with this, how are you managing? Like I said, doctors often aren't informed and treat us the exact same way they would someone with a typical mental illness, which I really think is wrong.

This is such an important topic👍 and I’m honestly bummed that no one else has jumped in yet... I completely agree that many mental health professionals don't grasp this distinction. In my opinion, about 90% of severe psychiatric issues are actually organic in nature, though I know that's going to be a controversial take for some. If you feel up to it, please share how you sustained your brain injury and what your day-to-day life looks like now...

I’m honestly not sure if this falls under that umbrella too...
