Music taste is a real headache for me. Even though I listen to pretty mainstream stuff, I always seem to run into people who just don't get it. I didn't care much at first, but over the years, it’s started to get frustrating. Honestly, I’d be a lot happier if I could just talk about music with people on the same wavelength. It’s been an issue for years now. I constantly meet people who want to geek out over music that I think is absolute garbage; then I’m stuck choosing between playing nice or snapping and being a jerk. Wouldn't it be great to encounter people who either don't care about music at all, or if I'm lucky, people who actually listen to what I like? For years, I've met people obsessed with genres I can't stand—they're boring and pushy, and eventually, I lose my cool and tell them where to shove it. It's a cycle. It's not like I go out looking for music debates, but I have bad luck and always end up with these fanatics who are obsessed with music that I find terrible. I have a friend who won't stop badgering me about some obscure indie rock bands, or I'll go on a date with someone who is strictly into hip-hop and acts like her life mission is finding a rapper to marry. Lately, I've realized how much people really push their music on me, whether in friendships or dating. It's always some fanatic. They push me until I snap, things get ugly, and then they play the victim. I tell them to stop bothering me with it, and they act shocked, like, "I didn't do anything." I don't know, to me, every new person feels like a potential music freak (one who likes everything I hate). Looking back, it’s been the same story year after year. I'm not exactly a saint; I have very specific musical theories, but I try to avoid those conversations altogether. My recent relationships have mostly involved people who nag me and then act offended when I warn them I've had enough. Someone recently started a thread asking, "Would you be happier if you were more attractive?" Well, I have to admit, based on everything I've dealt with, I’d definitely be happier if I just met people who shared my musical taste.

I’m down for pretty much any genre except country music. You'd have an easier time if you just had my mindset

It's on you. You gotta tell them straight up that you actually hate the stuff they're playing instead of just asking them to stop. Just say, "Man, I seriously can't stand that genre," and I bet they'll quit messing with you. You're handling this all wrong...

So, back when I used to have my satellite radio running, Sunday nights were my little ritual. It was like a slow prelude to the work week ahead. I’d tune into these stations out of Germany or Austria—most of them would just spin nothing but ballads on Sunday evenings. You know, the classics like Richard Marx, Michael Bolton, T Pau, Phil Collins, Cyndi Lauper, maybe some Lionel Richie or Johnny Logan. Just pure, easy listening to help me unwind.

I mean, that kind of vibe definitely wouldn't work for me on a Saturday morning, right? When I was listening to those stations more regularly, I actually knew their whole programming schedule by heart.

Even with our local American stations, a lot of them lean into that mellow, easygoing stuff on Sunday nights too. Though, I guess during the summer, the programming shifts a bit. Maybe it's just those Sunday nights creating a bit too much nostalgia for me.

Anyway, sometimes music is just my favorite way to escape reality.

I used to struggle with those exact questions back in the day; I was always dreaming of finding friends who were just like me, and my biggest metric for that connection was always music...

And even when I did meet people listening to the same things, we’d either only stay friends for a short while or it would just stay really superficial. 🤷

Nowadays, I don't really limit myself to just one or two genres, but I still find myself rebelling a bit—like, I'll just walk away from a crowd that's dancing and singing along to some totally primitive artists.

It doesn't bother me if someone likes hip-hop or whatever, but it does bug me when someone seems to have zero taste at all,
you know, just settling for whatever mindless pop junk is playing on the local radio stations. 🙄
and they don't even know anything about the big international artists.
It’s frustrating, though luckily I do have some "musically intelligent" friends,
but even then, I don't really dive deep into music discussions with any of them, though there's definitely still a noticeable difference between the groups.

Someone started a thread asking 'Would you be happier if you were more attractive?', but personally, I have to admit I'd be a lot happier if I just met people who shared my musical tastes, based on everything I've been through.

But what about actually going to places where you might run into people who share your taste?
Like concerts, for example...

Perhaps if you all look atGroup Psychotherapy: The Top 7 Dumbest American Songs through that specific lens—treating them as a sort of psychological study—it might actually help resolve some of your frustrations.😵

Come on, people... one really needs to outgrow a lot of things in life. Just stay brave.👍

I honestly thought we were going to dive deep into how music messes with your head—which would’ve been a total trip to talk about—but I guess this thread is more like, "Why is everyone else such a poser compared to me?"

Look, regarding your little dilemma—there are always at least two sides to every story. What I'm trying to say is that just like you see them as complete weirdos, they probably look at you the exact same way. Like, "this guy is so stubborn he won't budge on anything." Instead of putting up a wall against people like that, it might be cooler to try and wrap your head around what actually draws them to that sound. That’s just how I’d play it. Unless, of course, they're being super obnoxious about it, but that's a whole different beast.
