A teaching assistant at a major state university was wearing a t-shirt featuring Che Guevara. Since he isn't the lead professor, I'm wondering if this is even allowed. Given that his image represents a communist ideology responsible for millions of deaths—which stands in direct opposition to the democratic values we uphold here in the US—could there be any legal repercussions or sanctions if a lawsuit were filed?

Which communist barbarian is supposedly banned in the States? It’s a good thing they don't go around wearing Joseph Stalin on their sleeve, too.
Che Guevara is just an idealized icon; people conveniently ignore everything terrible he actually did because nobody wants to face the reality of his actions.
Still, it is genuinely unsettling to see a university teaching assistant wearing a shirt like that. They really should know better...

The European Union issued a declaration condemning communist regimes back in 2006, and the USA followed suit in 2008. I honestly don't think someone serving as a government official should be carrying those views around.

Why not? Even Slavoj Žižek wears it quite often, and he still lectures at the most prestigious universities in the world

Why on earth should a shirt featuring Che Guevara be banned?

So what if he wears that image?

Everyone has the right to wear whatever they want, and who the hell are you to lecture anyone else?

You’ve got an avatar featuring the biggest jerk on the planet—the leader of a terrorist superpower that has caused more misery and death since WWII than all the communism and fascism combined.

And when it comes to Che Guevara, the people of Latin America are way more qualified to judge him than you or anyone else like you.
To them, he’s a symbol of fighting back against American robbery and the terrorizing of Latin American nations.

Che Guevara is basically the patron saint of the struggling masses in Latin America—though nowadays, he’s mostly just a trendy icon for some Western college kids buying overpriced t-shirts with his face on them.
Sure, if you dig through the archives, you’ll find plenty of articles claiming Che personally executed crowds or ran concentration camps, but honestly—whatever.

The internet is great for that—it provides endless confirmation bias for whatever political stance you already decided to hold.

It’s just like JBT. A hero to some, a villain to others.

Honestly, you can take everything the Western media writes about him and shove it.

And when it comes to actual killing? You won't find worse murderers than those polished, high-society politicians in the West—guys like Tony Blair, Nicolas Sarkozy, David Cameron, and of course, that Nobel Peace Prize winner over at the White House.

All those EU resolutions about "totalitarian regimes" just make me roll my eyes. People using their massive NATO war machine to kill and destroy have zero moral ground to lecture anyone else.

As for those rich young Westerners wearing the shirts? It's all just fashion to them. 90% of the time, they don't have the slightest clue who the guy actually was.

My wife used to have a Che Guevara t-shirt back when it actually meant something; then, once every hipster in town started wearing them, she decided she was done with it.

By the way, I intended to type "jerk," but honestly, this typo is kind of hilarious... 🤣

That assistant is useless.

What on earth does being a communist have to do with wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt? People walk around in apparel featuring Queen Elizabeth II all the time without suddenly becoming monarchists. It’s just pop culture; it’s fashion. Trying to force an ideological motive into that context is frankly idiotic. We all know what actual communist symbols look like.

So, what exactly would count as a communist symbol then? And why on earth should displaying a symbol of communism be against the law?

Look, whether a system was "good" or "bad" is irrelevant when you're talking about personal freedom. If I feel like walking around wearing a shirt with pictures of Hitler and Stalin on it, that's my business. As long as I'm not out there harassing people or attacking anyone, nobody has any right to come after me or sanction me for it.

Dennis Davis5 said:Spot on.

When it comes to the European Union and NATO—with the USA leading the charge—wearing shirts with his face on them, like Obama, would be totally normal.

Look, I don't care if he wears it on his own time like any regular guy, but as a government official? That's illegal.

What's next? Pol Pot? Kim Jong Un?

Obmana is a murderer and a war criminal on such a massive scale that even Che Guevara looks like a mere apprentice by comparison.

My friend, I couldn't agree more. I would only add that 90% of those aimless Western youths lack an understanding of almost everything, including the very terms they use.

We are fortunate to have had the chance to live among a reasonably informed and educated populace. This consumerist society seems hell-bent on manufacturing idiots who lack both basic intellect and any capacity for critical thought.

And one more thing: I've had a change of heart. I decided to have my friend paint a portrait of István Bécsáry as a fisherman instead of a woman dressed as Che Guevara...

But if he truly were an icon—well, credit where credit is due! 🙏
