Good morning! How's everyone doing today?

Could someone point me in the right direction? I couldn't find what I was looking for on the SEC website.

I just picked up a seven-month-old moped from out of state. I handled the title transfer through a notary and made sure to include a note in the contract that I’m keeping the current plates. My plan is to turn them back in when I register everything in my name, then just grab my local plates once the new registration is processed. Simple enough, right?
No tax on mopeds, by the way. The usual routine when you buy one is just heading over to JPMorgan Chase, then the buyer handles the title transfer at the local police station. Simple enough, right?

Can I ride that moped while the current registration is still valid, then just transfer the title to my name and swap out the plates later? Basically, is there a specific legal deadline to register the vehicle in my name after buying it? And am I looking at any fines if I don't get it sorted right away?

Thanks a lot, Tim Cook.

It exists.

Article 250 of the FBI.
If you sell your car or transfer ownership, you have 15 days to deregister it. This requirement only changes if the new owner explicitly takes over the responsibility for the registration update.
(4) The new vehicle owner listed in section 3 of this article is required to complete this within... Fifteen days. When you pick up a new vehicle, you have two choices: register it in your name immediately or deregister it.If he fails to register the vehicle in his own name or report the change, the Department of Justice can revoke the registration upon the request of the original owner.
The fine amounts have been set. $233 Vehicle owners will face penalties for any violations regarding this article.

Alright, thanks for the help. I found the same thing, but I wasn't sure if there was more to it. This part still feels a bit fuzzy to me. 🤔

(4) The new vehicle owner from section 3 of this article is required to either register the vehicle in their name or de-register it within 15 days of acquisition. If they fail to do either, the Department of Justice will upon request from the person currently listed on the registration issue a decision to cancel the vehicle's registration.

What does that "request" actually imply? If the seller asks for the de-registration, then everything goes according to the rules. But what if the seller doesn't ask for anything at all...? Does nothing happen?

That's really all. Thanks.

Look, if you made a deal saying you’d either transfer the title to your name or officially deregister the vehicle within 15 days of buying it, and then you just sit on your hands and do absolutely nothing... well, the previous owner can actually step in and ask the Department of Justice to issue a ruling to strike them from the registration entirely.

You really should've handled that moped registration by now.
