One thing is driving me crazy
I put 17 MP3-CE files on a USB drive and added numbers (1 through 17) to the front of every filename so they’d play in order
When I plug the drive into my car stereo, it completely ignores the sequence. It jumps from track 1 to 6, then 10, then 15, and so on.
The same thing happens when I try listening on an MP3 player at home.
It makes no sense. Everything plays perfectly in order on my computer, but the hardware won't cooperate.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have a feeling the playback issues might be tied to how they were transferred onto the flash drive in the first place. You might want to try copying them over one by one to see if that makes a difference... Or, honestly, just merge all the tracks into a single file so you don't have to deal with this headache anymore.

I am running into the exact same headache—my car's MP3 player refuses to play my tracks in the order I actually have them arranged on my USB drive.
I've heard whispers that this all comes down to the Tag data, and that you need to use some kind of software to number everything properly.
I went ahead and downloaded two programs, "Mp3Tag" and "Tag&Rename", but honestly, I am struggling to wrap my head around how to actually execute the process.
What I'm looking for is a way to rename the files so they follow a sequence like: 01 xxxxx, 02 yyyyy, 03 zzzzzz, and so on.
Does anyone here happen to know how to make this work?

Look, if you have Total Commander installed on your PC, there's a simple workaround: before you move anything over to the USB, just sort everything by name on your computer first—both on the PC side and once it's on the USB—to ensure the order sticks.
If that sounds a bit confusing, don't worry! I can put together a quick video tutorial for you to follow.

Look, I don't need them playing randomly by name; I need to be the one who decides the playback order.
Here is the situation:
On my USB drive, I went ahead and added numbers in front of each track like this:
1 Mladen Grdovič
2 Daniel Martinovič
3 Oliver Dragojevič
4 Petar Grašo
When I play them from the computer, they follow that exact sequence—but the moment I plug the drive into the car, the order goes haywire! It starts with Oliver, then jumps to Mladen, then Grašo, and finally Daniele.

Alright, I'll give that Total Commander method a shot later and see if I can actually figure out how to pull it off.

It’s entirely possible that your car's media player isn't actually looking at the filenames—it might be sorting everything based on the order they were burned onto the USB drive, or perhaps it's prioritizing some other specific metadata field within the MP3 tags instead.

I’d suggest checking the Properties -> Details MP3-ac section, or maybe you could play around with the Mp3tag program to see if there's a hidden logic buried in the tags that dictates the playback order.

Sure, you can set the order however you want, but even the hardware knows there's no way Bruno Mars and Kelly Clarkson are coming before Barry Manilow and Pitbull..

Try this instead and enjoy:

dBruno Mars

Best, 🙂

Man, honestly? I haven't met anyone else who actually cares about the specific order of their tracks! I always just set my players to shuffle whenever possible—well, wherever the settings allow—but hey, there's your answer.

Usually, the music on a USB stick plays in whatever order it was copied onto the drive. That's just how it works!
If you aren't dealing with a massive library, the easiest way is just to drag and drop them one by one. But if you have a huge mountain of songs to move over, you really don't want to be manually tagging everything one at a time—that sounds like a nightmare, doesn't it?
However, if you need to batch rename things by name, date, or file size... oh man, you can do that in seconds using Total Commander once you get the hang of it! It doesn't matter if you're renaming 5 files or 500—it's lightning fast. If you need me to whip up a quick tutorial for that, just say the word!
And hey, if anyone needs a walkthrough on how to properly tag files, I can put a guide together for that too!

The sequence is absolutely critical to me—I’ve actually layered spoken word segments into every single track
Because of that, they really have to play them in this specific order I've laid out.
I tried installing Total Commander, but I'm having a bit of a hard time getting the hang of it—so if you're willing to walk me through the process, I would truly appreciate it.

You haven't even tried basic A-B-C-D steps yet. 🤦 🤔

Well, I suppose if the 1-2-3 approach isn't working, there’s probably no reason to think the a-b-c method would be any different, right? 🤔

Maybe they should just go ahead and manually edit the track number tag.

Well, look—if you need them in a strictly specific order, you're basically looking at two options: either you manually add a prefix number to each individual track, or you just drag and drop them onto the USB drive one by one in the exact order you want them to play.
I just really hope you aren't dealing with a massive library of songs here!

I only need this for about 10 songs.
Adding a number to the beginning of each track title just isn't doing the trick.
On my PC, everything plays in the exact order I want—prefixed numbers and all—but the moment I plug into any external player, the sequence goes completely haywire.
Some colleagues suggested that I really ought to be using a dedicated tag editor to fix this properly, which should force the playback to follow my specific order.
I actually have "Mp3tag", "Tag & Rename", and "Total Commander" installed on my machine, but I honestly can't find that specific feature anywhere within them.

It's because things sort alphabetically.🙂

aMladen Grdovic
bDaniela Martinovich
cOliver Dragojevic

If he sets it up like this:

aaaMladen Grdovic
aaDaniela Martinovich
aOliver Dragojevic

The order will be aaa then aa and finally a. 🙂

I mean, if there's a 1, 2, or 3 at the front, does it just go randomly, or maybe 2, 3, 1, or something else entirely? 😬

It seems pretty obvious that the software is pulling the playback order straight from the Track number Tag, so I guess it really doesn't matter how you decide to name your files 👍

Or, who knows, maybe he just has shuffle turned on in his media player 🤣

Exactly—the car player just plays everything based on whatever order is listed in the track number tag.
That’s precisely why I’m asking if someone could walk me through how to actually set that sequence within the Tag itself.
To be clear, I already have "Mp3tag", "Tag & Rename", and "Total Commander" installed on my system.
Is it actually possible to get this sorted using any of those specific programs?

Well, you certainly could do it with all three of those, though I honestly don't think you even need to bother with them at all.

If you're running Windows, you can just right-click the file, head over to properties, then click on details, and there's your track number right next to the '#' sign. You just change it, hit apply, and you're good to go.

It's a total piece of cake. 👍
