France strips officials of conscience rights regarding same-sex weddings

Before the law passed this past May legalizing same-sex marriage in France, a massive wave of French mayors acting as officiants stood up and said they wouldn't perform those ceremonies. Around 20,100 of them actually banded together under an association called "Mayor for a Child" to protect civil servants who have religious or moral objections to marrying same-sex couples. Take Jean-Michel Colo, the mayor over in Arcangues near Biarritz—he refused to marry two men alongside seven of his assistants. He racked up about 1,500 letters of support in June, but ended up getting threatened with a lawsuit by the couple involved. Honestly? The guy wasn't sweating fines, jail time, or even being kicked out of office. "If I have to go to the guillotine, so be it!" Jean-Michel Colo declared. The "Mayor for a Child" group had his back, too. "We're ready to foot the bill for his legal defense," said Franck Meyer, the group's spokesperson. "Look, we respect the mayors who choose to marry same-sex couples, but that respect has to go both ways. You've got to respect the people refusing this 'civilizational shift' forced on them by this law. Their freedom of conscience matters." Too bad the Supreme Court, the highest legal authority in France, just ruled that mayors don't get to claim conscience protections.
