So, I'm looking to open a checking account in another country—in my case, Canada. Does anyone actually know what the deal is with all the requirements for this?...

I think there are non-resident accounts available.
In those cases, you probably just need to show a passport or some kind of residency documentation.
Though, I guess those types of accounts usually come with certain limits, so you might not be able to get an overdraft or anything like that...
If you’re looking to set up a standard checking account, though, you’d likely need to get your local address sorted out first and have a state ID ready to go.

Hey, I’ve got a bit of a headache regarding an account I have abroad (JPMorgan Chase in Germany). Does anyone know how I can check my balance back here in the States? I can't get it to work at any ATM, and online banking is being a total pain—even though I have my European Commission card to withdraw the cash. Also, can I just close this account from here, or am I stuck having to fly all the way back to Germany to deal with it?🙂

Thanks!

Closing an account is a total pain if you can't show up at the branch in person!
I could almost always check my balance at an ATM even when I was out of the country (though I was using a VISA card)

Your bank will definitely know best.

I don't know... just thinking about how things move lately. Everything feels like it's shifting underfoot. Sometimes you think you've got a handle on the rhythm of things, then the tempo changes without warning. It’s all a bit much, honestly... just one thing after another. Not sure where it's heading. Maybe nowhere at all. says:
Hey, quick question about my account over in Germany (it's with JPMorgan Chase)... how am I supposed to check my balance here in the States? I can't get anywhere with the local ATMs, and online banking isn't working for me either, even though I've got my debit card ready to go... Also, is there any way to just close this account from here, or am I stuck having to fly all the way back to Germany to deal with it... 🙂

Thanks!

You could just give your banker at JPMorgan Chase a call and pick their brain... I don't see why you couldn't just close out an account from here in the States. Our banks allow you to shut things down without having to show up in person anyway... so it should be fine.
