CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019

Between the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the Women's World Cup, and Copa América, things have been absolutely stacked lately. But yesterday, we kicked off yet another major tournament—the Gold Cup, which is the big one hosted by CONCACAF.



The whole thing runs from June 15th through July 7th. We've got 16 teams split up into four groups, and the hosting duties are shared between the USA, Jamaica, and Costa Rica.

Yesterday saw some action in Group A, where Mexico absolutely crushed Cuba 7-0, and Canada took care of business against Martinique with a solid 4-0 win.

Canada and Martinique were way more evenly matched than the scoreline suggests—Parsemain is just a classic Caribbean standout who’s been a threat for a decade now. They missed a few golden opportunities, while Canada was clinical at punishing every little mistake. Honestly? I think this squad is really starting to solidify itself as a legitimate contender for the World Cup cycle. There's definitely a dip in quality among the Central American teams—more of a generational shift, really—while Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago are finally showing signs of life.

I'm really liking this Canada squad. They just dismantled Cuba 7:0 tonight. It feels like they finally have a decent national team on their hands. I'd love to see them compete in the World Cup.

Curacao is moving on to the quarterfinals! 🙏 🙏 They clawed back a draw against Jamaica in the 93rd minute just to stay alive, then sat back and watched El Salvador get absolutely dismantled by Honduras (0:4), which handed them the ticket through.

I honestly don't understand why they don't schedule the final round matches at the exact same time...

Well, because this is the USA and both matches are being played at the same stadium, 😁
It’s funny, really. During the last Gold Cup, everyone was making noise about how the tournament should be hosted outside of the States, but clearly, nobody's listening. This time around, they actually let Jamaica and Costa Rica host some matches, but they didn't go as far as giving them an entire group—just the first round. I mean, Canada used to host stuff too, so it's not unheard of. I can't tell if it's a matter of greed, a lack of interest from the other teams, or if big American corporations are just looking to squeeze every last cent out of the gate receipts...

On the pitch, Canada and Haiti are stepping up. Their quarterfinal matchup should be a wild one to watch. And man, seeing Costa Rica lined up against Mexico? I'm rooting for them to pull off the upset and knock them out!

This has been one of the more interesting editions I’ve followed—especially Group C, which was absolutely wild. Curacao seemed to rely more on luck than logic after that match against Honduras, but hey, maybe this win will give them a much-needed boost? Things are definitely leveling out in the standings, though I didn't see that slight dip from Trinidad and Tobago coming—especially during their game against Panama.

What a match. Honestly, there were moments that felt borderline comedic, didn't they?
But in the end, both sides just completely fell apart.
It was some real old-school football—pure and simple.😁 A breath of fresh air, frankly, compared to the way Uruguay and Argentina have been playing lately.
