Government is just a mirror held up to the national consciousness. Whether people want to admit it or not, it’s far too easy to just sit back, watch the news, and grumble about how someone else is crooked or how they stole everything while we miserable folks got left with nothing. Is Sanders's administration still in power? Yes! Is Sanders sitting in a jail cell? No! Has anyone actually been held accountable? Hardly. Did Bandić even get questioned after all those scandals? Not a chance. Polančec gets a year of probation... honestly, you only need to look at—or briefly listen to—our rather questionable Speaker of the House. What on earth are we even talking about here?
We need to be the change we want to see in the World. That’s something Gandhi said a long time ago. Let’s start with ourselves—just a little bit every single day, each of us doing whatever we can in our own way. Make it a point to do one tiny thing daily that makes the world a slightly better place. To me, that is the only path forward. If we do that, eventually the crowd at the top will shift to reflect a better collective mindset. Sitting around complaining that everyone else is guilty while claiming we are helpless is pure hypocrisy. How many Americans, if placed in Sanders's shoes, wouldn't have done the exact same thing? Once there are enough Americans acting differently, then—and only then—will we see a different kind of person leading the government.
It’s funny, isn't it? When "those" people over there cook the books, they're thieves. But when "my" crowd cooks the books, avoids taxes, or finds some shady loophole to pocket cash, suddenly it’s perfectly fine. Even the folks at the very top are just a group of people who managed to "cook" things their way...
I truly believe we have to start with ourselves. This endless debating over who is responsible for what doesn't lead anywhere. It really just leads to this. 🙂
