The thought of tossing that lighter probably hit me while I was riding the ferry, and honestly, folks, I didn't buy a round-trip ticket just to throw things away.
And I'm not even sure I tossed it that same day; it was probably whenever I finally caught that damn ferry ride.

Once someone leaves my life—once it’s certain I won't be seeing them again—I clear out anything that might serve as a reminder of them. It’s my way of simplifying everything. I don't want some stray thought cluttering up my head, dragging me back to a past that's already gone.

I’m just as obsessed with it. When I go to destroy things, I make it a point to burn them—if they're flammable, of course—and I just sit there watching the flames.
Sometimes, you can actually see shapes or traces of text appearing in the ashes if there was writing or a picture involved. So, I'll burn those little scraps bit by bit, then use something to smudge the ash until the image is completely gone forever.

It would be easier to just soak the ashes in water, but I've always preferred scattering them into the wind. There's something about that certainty—knowing that absolutely no one will ever find out what used to be there.
