How to hook up dual monitors to a single laptop

Hey everyone, I’ve got an old Dell monitor sitting around that only has VGA and DVI inputs, and I’m thinking about keeping it as a secondary display...

My plan is to pick up a new monitor that connects to my laptop via USB-C, and then daisy-chain the old one to that primary monitor.
I used to rely on a dedicated docking station for this kind of thing, but from what I understand now, that functionality is often built right into the monitor itself.
Does this setup actually sound feasible? And are there specific things I should be looking for when shopping for the new screen?
I was eyeing the Dell P2419HC, but I noticed it only features a DisplayPort out. What I really need is either a VGA/DVI out or an HDMI out—since my current setup relies on an HDMI-to-VGA adapter...

If anyone knows how to make this work, please help me out so I don't spend all weekend falling down a rabbit hole of specs! 🙂

In principle, you’re looking at daisy chaining here. I don't think it's going to work with that old monitor, though. You really need both displays to support either DP 1.2 or USB-C (Thunderbolt). I'm not entirely certain, but my gut tells me you won't be able to pull this off using a DVI port.

Actually, looking at it again, I think I can make this work without all that extra gear. In this video, the guy connects one monitor via USB-C and the other through an HDMI port—which is exactly what I’m planning to do. My only real hurdle is that I'll need to pick up a monitor with Power Delivery built-in, since my laptop relies on that USB-C connection for power...

You’ve covered just about everything, though you forgot to mention which laptop you're actually running. If you can let me know the model, I'll be able to give you a much better answer.
