But look, having that realization doesn't change the current reality; it just proves you finally see exactly where you stand. From here, you either start moving—either by playing along with the "rules of the game" or by checking out entirely. There's really no middle ground once you see it clearly. We basically signed up for the first option by default, and if we choose the second, there's no debate about it—it's a done deal. But if we've accepted the first, then the choice is between just drifting through this lethargy or actually taking charge and building a life that serves your own interests. Most people just live their lives according to what their parents or society wants, but since you've "opened your eyes," it's only a matter of time before you take the reins and paint your own canvas, even if that involves dealing with these bouts of nihilism.

👍 I am 100% on board with this.
If everyone just gave in to the idea that nothing matters, where would we even be? We'd have absolutely nothing to keep us going—nothing to actually make life feel worth living...
Fight those thoughts off and, like this guy so perfectly put it, paint that damn canvas however you see fit. It's a choice we all have—it's really just down to who actually puts in the work and who just lets things happen to them.
Don't let that kind of nihilism drag you down... life is massive, and honestly, what you choose to do with it can be just as huge. Just keep the faith and keep pushing. 😉

Generally speaking, isn't the point just to live as long and as well as possible? 👍🥳

But honestly? What’s the point of a long life if I don't have sex, love, and my writing to keep me going?

A few years back, I was spiraling through those same dark thoughts. Back then, I eventually landed on this conclusion: the whole point of my life is simply to be happy.
Nowadays, I still hold that view, though my definition of happiness has evolved. I’m talking about long-term fulfillment and deep satisfaction, not just fleeting highs.
Who knows what I’ll believe tomorrow? I have a gut feeling I’ll find an even better way to look at it. 🙂

There’s a brilliant psychotherapist, Yal, who argues that you don't just stumble upon the answer to "What is the meaning of my life?" It's not some destination you reach; rather, meaning emerges indirectly through the act of living meaningfully. Speaking from experience, I couldn't agree more.

So, take a second to think about what actually excites you. What are you good at? Lean into that. Double down on it. Live with genuine passion for whatever you do!

In the meantime, here are two incredible Rilkean insights that never fail to hit me with their sheer simplicity and depth:

"I would step out of my own heart and walk beneath the infinite sky!"

And...
"Have patience with everything unresolved, and try to love the questions themselves."

It has even reached the point where scrolling through this forum feels pointless. (I mean, obviously, everything is somewhat meaningless😁, but at least it used to be engaging.) Now, I honestly couldn't care less about reading anything. What for? It’s just the same old topics, the same personalities—it’s all just a massive waste of time...
Nothing really feels meaningful anymore.

I know what comes next: people telling me to go see a therapist. But for what? To get "tools" to help me function until my time runs out? Why am I even here?🤷 Why should I do anything at all? It’s all just a Sisyphus job.

totally losing it😍

Give 1984 a read

Break down the concept of "doublethink"

It’s essentially this—you just need enough self-discipline to pull it off properly—and you won't find it an issue when things stop making sense. They make sense if you decide they do... because you've chosen to believe they do, quite deliberately...

Following the logic that 2+2=5

By the way, if you actually manage to pull that off, let me know

It's the same thing, like I'm listening to my own thoughts. I don't think you need a shrink, mostly because you've realized that the way most "normal" Americans live might not actually be normal.
I ask myself the same things—why do I have to do all this when I can't take any of it with me when I die, and none of it helps if there's an afterlife, assuming one exists😬.
But I have to keep going, at least for a while longer until I satisfy my parents' wish for me to finish my degree... then I'll figure out my next move. Honestly, I'd rather just move out to the woods and disappear.😬

Once you start spiraling down those rabbit holes about whether life actually means anything, it’s way too easy to slide into some pretty dark mental territory.
No matter how we choose to live our lives, let’s face it—we’re just tiny little specks drifting through the cosmos, totally insignificant. That’s just the cold, hard truth.
Everything we reach for—it all carries meaning, and yet, it’s all completely meaningless at the same time.

I honestly think it’s vital to have actual STANCES on everything, or at least most things. You need those foundations to stand on. And then, of course, there are the GOALS you set for yourself.
When we finally kick the bucket, the only thing we really leave behind is the stories people tell about us. Basically, just whatever memories others hold onto.

electrichound94, if I'm being real, you're still just a kid. You seriously need to hit the books more, just so you can theoretically build up some perspectives and actually give yourself some goals to chase. Don't sweat it too much, though; we all go through this weird phase at some point.

Well, I have a feeling not everyone is just a speck. Some people are important specks—kings, politicians, athletes, singers—mostly famous and powerful.

But look—human life, regardless of its circumstances, is just a fleeting moment in the face of eternity. It’s nothing. It carries no weight.

btw silverraven7, unfortunately, I don't exactly fall into the "girls" category.😬

Brilliant logic. Let's all just kill ourselves right now to see what's waiting on the other side. If there's nothing? No big deal. 🙂

I mean, honestly, it’s totally normal to spiral like that sometimes... damn... I think it hits pretty much everyone at some point, where you just lose the plot, and then eventually something else grabs your attention and suddenly life feels like it actually makes sense again...

And since we all have to keep grinding through life anyway, you might as well try to make it even slightly bearable... you know, just enough to catch a few decent moments here and there... I don't know, maybe it's just because spring is finally hitting, or maybe this winter was just way too long... everything I've worked on lately just feels completely pointless, and whatever new project I start, it immediately feels like a waste of time... honestly, I'd rather just be out somewhere riding my bike and forgetting about all of it... 😁

either you're depressed or you just hate studying—maybe it's something you're being forced into. try finding yourself in all this and figuring out what you actually want to do with your life
