wearyowl29 said:So, I was thinking about this today—what actually happens if someone who isn't dealing with depression decides to pop some antidepressants, like Zoloft or something?
And another thing on my mind... is it even possible to fake depression or anxiety when you're sitting there in a doctor's office?🤷

I mean, if someone starts taking antidepressants, I guess you could argue they might end up feeling even more depressed, though I’m not entirely sure how that works out in practice. It just seems kind of strange to me, honestly... like, why would anyone actually choose to take something meant to treat depression if it makes them feel that way? I don't know, maybe I'm just overthinking it, but it feels like a bit of a paradox, doesn't it?😁 I mean, if she starts taking antidepressants, there’s a chance she might just get hit with this wave of euphoria, and then everyone around her is going to think she’s completely lost it—which, I guess, could lead to her being stuck in a psychiatric ward at a place like Johns Hopkins or something for a much longer stay than anyone intended.

Let’s talk about those hypothetical "super-tablets" from the future—the kind that could supposedly keep you feeling amazing no matter what life throws your way.

Think about it this way: there won't be any need to take action. If you're only acting because you want to chase that feeling of happiness or satisfaction, then why bother? If you already feel happy and fulfilled right now—without doing a single thing—then the drive to act just disappears. 😬

The only thing you’ll actually have to do is swallow a pill. 😈)

But nah, that's just theory... though, theoretically speaking, if there were some little pill or powder that could send you into an orgasmic trance, I'd probably take it once in a while—provided it wasn't toxic and didn't turn into an addiction, obviously... but I've got this nagging feeling that in practice—or maybe even in theory—those two requirements might actually contradict each other. 🤷

Anyway, I'd probably just settle for some high-grade, non-lethal chocolate...

So, there wouldn't be any reason to actually do anything—because if you're only acting just to chase that happy feeling, why bother if you *already* feel happy without having to lift a finger? 😬

(basically, the only thing left to do is swallow the pill. 😈)
Yeah, you're totally tripping. 😁 Huxley described this pretty well 🙂 and it's called Soma. 😉.
anyway, I don't see any motivation that would make me pop a pill just to sit around and do nothing.😲

Is it stuck? 😍 Does "lonegardener" sound like a female name to you? 😬

Exactly. That’s my point—I'm aiming at something much bigger than just a scapegoat. Even the citizens living in a Brave New World still find ways to stay busy... but why? There isn't even a reason to do it. 🤷

In short, could you explain to me *why* that option is such a dealbreaker for you? Is it because you don't want to be stuck feeling constant, uninterrupted happiness? 😬

God damn it, man. 😬
So just say right away that being a donkey is what gets you going.
Why couldn't Hannah Davis18 just be donkey-like? After a while, you realize having periods of sadness, joy, peace... it's the ups and downs that actually make us feel alive.
Besides, there's plenty of things in real life similar to being a donkey, so it's not exactly bliss when you get hooked: :diego maradona:.

And why is it that you never actually start your own threads, but instead just hijack everyone else's? ☕

In technical terms, I guess you could call it trolling. 😬

Can we please get back to the topic at hand?

So, what you're saying is that once you feel great, you get bored after a few days (or months? years?) and suddenly crave feeling miserable just to prove you're still breathing? 😬

Unknown, I'm not... entirely convinced. 😈

I don't follow—how is this even a derailment?
😲🤷
If I had started talking about quantum mechanics, that would be a detour. To me, there seems to be a very direct link between the title and my question.

edit: Or maybe there isn't. It looks like Nemrut has something specific on their mind and just wants a practical answer. But personally, I was more interested in the general concept of chasing a "good mood" through external chemicals.

I never said anything about feeling miserable. Emotions are what make us human, I guess. Besides, I already mentioned that cocaine and booze are pretty good mood lifters. For certain things. 😳

When you say emotions, are we talking about something supernatural, or just basic brain activity?

If it's the latter, I don't see why we couldn't just engineer a pill to trigger whatever specific emotion you're looking for. 🤷 😬

Here’s the topic. Basically, there are two threads here:
What happens when someone without depression takes an antidepressant? Specifically Deprozel—never heard of that one, I guess.
Can you fake depression and anxiety? I guess maybe. It seems possible, though I doubt anyone would bother with all that drama unless they had a reason to.

There’s nothing mystical about feelings.😉
I still feel like a human being, not some damn robot.

Anyway, I'll stop. Don't want to start an argument with Jerry Martinez5. 😘

edit; sure, you could fake it. Why not... but there's also that thing where a doctor helps out by writing down a "slightly different" diagnosis just so your medical records don't look a certain way. 😉

Ugh, such a stickler for rules... 🤣

Doesn't taking antidepressants when you aren't depressed strike you as a bit 'Brave New World'? You can't really call me out just because my associations are a little darker than yours. 😍

Anyway, I won't drone on... 😬

You said it! 👍

But that’s exactly my point—I’m not entirely sure how your version of "feeling human" actually differs from being a robot. To me, they sound suspiciously similar. 🤷

Jerry Martinez5 said:I actually want an expert to weigh in here: what happens when a perfectly healthy person starts taking antidepressants? (Is that even possible if someone is truly healthy? It feels like a totally sane person deciding to start consuming motor oil 😵 )

And what about someone with a different diagnosis who just decides to self-medicate with antidepressants on their own whim?

1. Their mood doesn't suddenly skyrocket into hypomania—it usually just stays level.
2. They deal with all those unpleasant side effects.

The reality is that antidepressants aren't designed to turn a depressed person into a ray of sunshine (hypomanic or euphoric); they simply drag someone out of a negative hole and back down to zero—that "everything feels flat" sensation.

PS
Psychiatrists aren't exactly omnipotent, but they can tell when someone is playing games with their symptoms—which, in certain contexts, can actually cross the line into criminal territory (forensic psychiatry spends a lot of time teaching how to distinguish a genuine patient from someone just faking it).

So, I guess, how do you even move from feeling "meh" to actually feeling okay? 🤔
Is there something else I can take or whatever?

Thread 1: This caught my eye. Are you sure about that? How can you be so certain? I'm asking seriously.

Wouldn't it be more logical for someone's mood to "lift"? I mean, antidepressants are linked to serotonin release, aren't they?

Do you have any idea how long that would actually take? I mean, it doesn't seem logical that a single session would be enough for someone to successfully fake a disorder they don't actually have.

It occurred to me that there is that whole "observation period" thing, where a patient is hospitalized specifically so their condition can be monitored over time. But honestly, I doubt conditions like depression and anxiety require that much extended observation just to be identified.

The issue isn't you; it's Apemant. 🤣🤣🤣
He's a great typer, but he clearly gets a huge kick out of derailing the conversation. 👎
Apemant, just start your own thread about whatever you want. 🙂

Regarding Edith: I've heard that too. Who wouldn't want to avoid a diagnosis causing issues? But what does a diagnosis even mean? It's just a sentence, nothing more. If you're doing the work, things change.

I find myself pondering a similar question—is there truly a cure for depression in principle, or are antidepressants merely legalized substances that provide the same chemical escapism as illicit drugs?
Furthermore, is it actually possible to develop a dependency on these medications?
To be honest, I find the idea that antidepressants actually "cure" depression rather unconvincing; it feels more like they simply mask the symptoms or attempt to invert them rather than addressing the root cause.

I mean, it’s a lot. Some people just don't want to know what they're actually dealing with. I guess it's one way to protect the patient, maybe.

How can you not see the difference? I mean, seriously, I can't really help you if you can't tell organic stuff apart from basic mechanics.😳

Wait, hasn't this already been answered? Or am I just mixing up different threads? 😕

Antidepressants only ease the symptoms. In that sense, they mask them. Depression isn't cured by meds; they're just a tool used during treatment. They dampen the symptoms just enough so you can actually face your problems.

The only real way to treat it, as far as I know, is psychotherapy. The goal there is to change the person—how they view themselves, their life, and the world around them. People who just pop pills and wait for it to pass... 👎

Also, just saying, talking about drugs like this is pretty messed up. 😢Especially when we're talking about people undergoing medical treatment. I mean, you wouldn't tell someone on morphine that they're just getting high at the government's expense.☕
