Was that diagnosis actually made by a specialist, or...?

Look, Melvin, you have a golden opportunity here to get everything answered straight from the source; specifically regarding the symptoms and what the treatment plan looks like.

I’m still a bit fuzzy on the whole agoraphobia thing—the idea that they're terrified they won't be able to get out
or escape an awkward situation, or that help won't be available even when people are right there.

But from what I've gathered—and I might be misinterpreting this—it seems like even when there isn't a crowd around, it's actually just
this fear of open spaces; they're intimidated by that sense of vastness, that massive
emptiness. Personally, I get claustrophobia much more than this, but those first folks are truly something else.

Raymond Wilson4, I sent you a private message—hope you actually get around to reading it.
I didn't want to bring up this specific phobia here in the public thread, because, well, I'd rather not have everyone else chiming in on my business, so
I reached out privately instead. Since you seem to actually know what you're talking about when it comes to these kinds of things, I figured I'd ask
for some advice.

How much does the development of social phobia and agoraphobia actually tie back to physical appearance—specifically, the real-time feedback you get from the people around you? I’m trying to figure out what the split would be between genetics and phenotype, or basically, how much of it is just environmental influence.

When it comes to social phobia, you’ve essentially got two distinct flavors. First, there's the generalized subtype, where the anxiety is just... everywhere. It's a constant, sweeping dread of almost any social interaction you throw at them. Then you have the specific subtype, which is much more targeted—fear centered around one or a few particular scenarios. From what I gather, the specific type often stems from being thrown directly into the line of fire during a traumatic social event; it's largely driven by your environment. With the generalized version, though, it feels like the genetic cards you were dealt play a much heavier role. I don't have the exact statistics on hand, though.

I honestly think I might be dealing with agoraphobia..
Whenever I find myself walking through Times Square, I get this overwhelming sensation that I’m about to pass out at any second. My legs just turn to jelly, and I feel this desperate urge to scramble toward a wall, a lamppost, or even a clock tower—anything just to get away from the wide-open space surrounding me. It’s like I have this constant, nagging feeling that I need to crouch down or sit right there on the pavement because I'm just going to collapse. Though, in all that time, I’ve never actually collapsed.

The strange thing is, it doesn't happen if I'm out in an empty field or something, which is also technically open space; it only seems to trigger when I'm in those massive urban plazas.

So, what you're describing sounds more like social anxiety—that specific kind of phobia
where the fear kicks in because there are crowds in public squares or downtown areas. It’s that dread of being surrounded by people; whereas out in an open field, there's no one around, or at least way fewer people to deal with.

To sounds more like agoraphobia to me. slygull92, are you actually terrified of the crowd itself, or is it just the fear of being judged by some random individual buried in that mass—you know, that nagging anxiety over what people might think of you?

It isn't about people, and it definitely isn't about their judgment; I don't even know them...
it’s just that I feel like I’m going to collapse in an open space because there’s absolutely nothing nearby to lean on..

I’m honestly torn—is this agoraphobia or just intense social anxiety? I’m terrified of even stepping out the door, let alone walking through town. It’s actually nauseating when I know I have to go somewhere. Every single day, I struggle just to get ready; I procrastinate leaving my apartment until the very last second, which means I end up being late constantly. It’s not that I can’t handle being surrounded by people—whether they're strangers or folks I know—in an enclosed space. It’s more about the "what ifs" during the transition from my front door to my destination. Like, what if I trip and take a dive? What if something falls on me and hurts me? What if someone attacks me—stabbed, mugged, or just hit with something random? Or what if I run into someone I used to know and make a fool of myself because I say hi and they don't, or vice versa? There are a million scenarios playing on loop in my head...
In reality, I’m not even that worried about getting physically hurt—it's more the fear of people making fun of me or laughing at my expense if, say, a construction barrier fell on my head 🙄 which, coincidentally, happens to me all the time 😕 if I walk past a playground, a ball is bound to smack me right in the face. If I'm crossing the street, some car will suddenly honk at me, I'll jump out of my skin, everyone stares, I turn bright red, I freeze up, total panic mode...
Driving, taking the subway, riding the bus, or even being on a bike is fine. But walking? When I have to go somewhere on foot, it’s absolutely terrible. I hate this part of myself, and I have no clue why I'm like this or how I can ever stop feeling this way.
If I had my way, I'd just be invisible. 😢

If you ask me, what she’s dealing with is just straight-up anxiety—maybe even some social phobia...

Lonicera, I suspect we’re looking at agoraphobia here, but for heaven's sake, go find a professional to talk to. You need an actual diagnosis and a real roadmap for treatment, not just guesswork from the internet.
