My bank quietly lowered my overdraft limit and offered to let me pay back the deficit over 12 monthly installments...

Basically, since I finished working and moved onto unemployment benefits through the state office—and because of some complications—my payout is about half of what my actual paycheck used to be

Makes sense.
They bumped mine up by $367, but that didn't kick in for another two months. I'll be seeing less through December.

Which bank is more flexible when it comes to approving overdrafts for temporary contract workers? Is it Chase or Bank of America?

Does anyone actually know—or have experience—with whether any bank even approves overdrafts for temporary staff? And if so, what are the terms?

JPMorgan Chase just automatically approved an overdraft for me barely a month after my first paycheck hit. Since then, they’ve just kept renewing and extending it. Nobody ever even bothered to ask what kind of contract I had.

Hey, can someone walk me through this? If I have an approved overdraft on my checking account for $2000, let’s say I actually used that $2000 for about 6 months. And the interest rate is sitting at 8.5%.

So, what's the actual damage? How much are they taking from me?
My math says 6000 x 0.085 = $170, is that really it? Does it not matter how many months I was actually in the red?

I don't really get how this works.😵

Second thing: does the bank just hit me with one big lump sum for the interest at the end of the year, regardless of when I was overdrawn?
Or do they split that amount up into 12 chunks and just shave it off every month?

It gets deducted monthly. So, you're looking at roughly $15 every month if you're consistently $2000 running a deficit

It really depends on which bank you're using. Some hit you with monthly fees, while others just charge you quarterly... Personally, I think it’d be totally normal if every bank just billed us monthly, but I know that’s not how things work here.

Hi there, does anyone happen to know how many days it typically takes for a leave of absence request to be approved? I haven't actually used this benefit before; I guess I had it automatically assigned to me a few years back, but I decided to close that account at the time. It might actually be quite helpful to have right now, so I was wondering if it’s possible to request an amount equivalent to one full salary? What kind of documentation or steps would I need to take?

Well, it really depends on which bank you're dealing with, but for something around the size of one paycheck, you might see an approval within ten minutes.
If you're looking for a larger amount, I suppose you might need to submit some recent pay stubs first.

Well, that sounds absolutely wonderful, because honestly, having an amount roughly equal to one of my monthly paychecks would be just what I need right now, so thank you so much for the information!

I just wanted to share an update here in case anyone finds this information useful; I stopped by the branch earlier today, and the representative at the desk mentioned that she would get back to me tomorrow, though she seemed to think there wouldn't be much of an issue, provided we just wait for the manager to sign off on everything... I suppose it helps that I've been a loyal customer there for years, and I've been paying down my mortgage consistently through this same bank, all while working for the same employer who has been reliably depositing my paycheck for over a decade now.

Hey, quick question.

Ran into some unexpected expenses, so I’m wondering... if I’m overdrawn at JPMorgan Chase by about 5000-$2000, what kind of monthly interest am I looking at? A bit worried that being overdrawn by that much might mean I'm getting hit with 300-$133 in interest every month, since this isn't an authorized overdraft, just a "negative balance"...

$133 if you're looking at a 100% annual interest rate on a monthly basis,
you'd be looking at roughly $3.50 in monthly interest on that amount.

So, because my finances have been a bit of a mess lately, JPMorgan Chase decided to kill my overdraft protection. Now I’m stuck paying it all back in 12 monthly installments. It sucks. Does anyone know if there's a chance I could just open a checking account at a different bank, move my direct deposit over, and actually get approved for an overdraft line? Which bank is the most chill about this kind of stuff?

It’s tough because you can always tell when someone’s being messy just by looking at their bank account.

What kind of mismanagement are we talking about?
Was it something specific involving Chase...?

I was a total mess with my finances—overdraft fees everywhere, maxed out credit cards... you name it. Basically, they shut everything down on me, and honestly? I can't even blame them. I was really hoping that if I just switched over to a different bank, maybe Chase or something, I could snag an overdraft line or a little breathing room.

That’s rough... If they pulled the plug, it’s not some minor glitch. It means things have gone south. Once a debt hits the credit bureau, the automated systems just shut everything down instantly. You could try calling them up—assuming you know how much you owe and when it happened—to see if they'll let you work out a payment plan, but honestly? Don't hold your breath.

I suspect the biggest issue was poor standing with his primary bank. A friend of mine dealt with something similar; he had issues with a Dunkin' card which landed him in the Republican Party system, even though his main bank account was fine, despite being overdrawn and holding another credit card.
Honestly, it doesn't even make sense to me that they would revoke his overdraft and card at a bank where he pays everything on time, simply because he ran into trouble with the Republican Party at a different institution.
