Oops... so what are we gonna do about all these conspiracy theories?
After spending years being grilled over at Guantanamo Bay, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed apparently confessed to planning basically every major terror attack lately—everything from 9/11 to that attempt on Pope John Paul II's life.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pentagon is claiming that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed—who’s been sitting in that US military prison at Guantanamo Bay for at least three years now—has "fully taken responsibility" for the September 11 attacks on the USA, the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City, and a whole laundry list of terror strikes globally.
"I am responsible for the September 11 operation from A to Z," Mohammed supposedly told officials on March 10th at Guantanamo Bay during a hearing before a military commission, according to the Pentagon. The Department of Defense dropped those interrogation transcripts this past Wednesday.
The Pentagon says Mohammed didn't just take credit for the hits, but also for the planning, the money, and the training for the folks behind them—including that crazy attempt by Richard Reid to blow up an American Airlines flight flying from Paris to New York City back in 2001 using a bomb hidden in his shoe.
"I also share responsibility for the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Philippines," Mohammed allegedly admitted, per the Pentagon.
He also reportedly claimed responsibility for planning 29 different attacks, including a bunch that never actually happened—like that "second wave" they talk about where the targets were supposedly the Sears towers, the Library of Congress in Chicago and Los Angeles, Bank of America in Seattle, and the Empire State Building in New York City.
And get this—he supposedly admitted he was "running a cell to produce biological weapons, like anthrax, and leading operations to create so-called dirty bombs (radioactive material triggered by conventional explosives) within the USA."
That whole "military commission" thing interrogating Mohammed is basically an administrative body meant to decide if he fits the definition of an "enemy combatant." Since 2001, the United States has been holding around 400 people at its Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba—which, honestly, goes against international laws—claiming they're part of al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and other extremists. They treat them as "enemy combatants in the war on terror," and legal experts in the George W. Bush administration argue these detainees don't get protection under the Geneva Convention, meaning they can be held indefinitely without a trial.
